It is also one of the few countries to have mined Bitcoin, using its abundant hydropower resources. So how did BTC become Bitcoin’s universally recognised ticker, and why does XBT still appear in parts of traditional finance? We unpack the story in this week’s VIP Desk. A computer designed to fly astronauts to the Moon once tried its hand at Bitcoin mining. In 2019, engineer Ken Shirriff programmed a restored Apollo Guidance Computer to run Bitcoin’s mining algorithm. It managed one hash every 10.3 seconds, meaning it would take roughly a million times the age of the universe to find a single block. Today, Bitcoin’s network runs at around 934 exahashes per second. At that scale, the Apollo computer’s odds stretch to roughly 13 million times the age of the universe per block. One of the defining computers of the space age, outmatched by the scale of the network now securing Bitcoin. Following Bitcoin’s rally to an eight-month high, BTC Markets Crypto Analyst Rachael Lucas (@Rachael_M_Lucas) shared her outlook on what is driving the move and the key level to watch next. “It looks like mechanics before conviction. Bitcoin cleared the top of its September range into a dense band of short liquidation levels, and forced buying did the rest,” Rachael said. “$84,000 is the level that matters. It was the breakout, and it should now hold as the floor if this is a regime change rather than a short squeeze.” Read the full article on Bloomberg, published 22 September 2026: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
