Charles Leclerc told me we had won the 2022 World Championship. Our garage was still working out whether the points were full. I worked three of these weeks with Max. All three were different. Thursday looked the same every time. A thread.

The danger is not easing off. Leaders start protecting. Pros make par putts 3.6 points more often than identical birdie putts. The comebacks start with a small task: "Let's cut it to 15 to 17."

The week you can win it is the week everyone wants to change the routine, and the week the routine matters most. bradleyscanes.substack.com/p… Every post is under 280 characters, and the link only appears in the last one.

7/ The drivers said it first. Stroll: five laps, then fifty of suffering. Piastri: worse than nothing if it fails. Verstappen: hot tea after twenty laps. The team that funded the trial isn't running the vest.

8/ Mandate the hour before the start. Fix the bottle. Let the drivers argue about the vest. Full essay: bradleyscanes.substack.com/p…

6/ The physiology: cool the skin and the brain thinks the job is done. Sweating drops, blood flow to the skin drops, and the heat stays in the core. Cold fluid cools from the inside, and at 80 per cent humidity, where sweat drips rather than evaporates, that's close to pure gain.

5/ Every car at Sepang today carries a chiller. Put the drink on it. The 0.5 kg of ballast a driver carries when he refuses the vest could be a frozen sleeve round his drink container instead.

4/ So why are we engineering a shirt?

2/ The only controlled trial Formula 1 has: 60 minutes at 32 C and 80 per cent humidity in full kit, Sepang's conditions. The cool shirt did not lower core temperature. 38.58 C against 38.32 C with no cooling at all.

3/ A separate simulated race at 40 C: water at 5 C cut the core temperature rise by a third. Eight of eight drivers finished. Two of eight did on warm fluid.

1/ Cold drinks cool better than the F1 cooling vest. Why wouldn't we engineer that? [image: trial.jpg]

F1 is in the hardest travel block of the year. Baku, Sepang, Singapore: six time zones in nineteen days. Can a team optimise jet lag for this triple header, or does it need a planned hit? The driver's answer and the garage's answer are different. 🧵

Business is the garage too. A London team at a 09:00 board meeting in Singapore is deciding at 02:00 body time. You can't hold a home clock. You can know which day is the hit and keep the big decisions off it.
