ICYMI: A robotic system is being developed to locate, grasp, and inspect subsea pipeline connections using “smart-touch” sensing—helping reduce risk and improve offshore reliability.
137
What makes this system different? It combines sonar, computer vision, and machine learning to autonomously detect and inspect subsea connections—then uses acoustic sensing to evaluate bolt tightness with precision.

Loose or failing flange bolts can lead to leaks that threaten worker safety, the environment, and offshore operations. Autonomous inspection reduces risk and enables more frequent, reliable monitoring—helping prevent failures before they happen.

Safety comes first. Operators are responsible for protecting personnel, including evacuation decisions. BSEE ensures they are prepared through required plans, drills, and safety systems before hurricane season begins.
68
Stay weather aware. Operators are responsible for real-time decisions, including evacuations, often in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard. BSEE ensures the plans and safety systems are in place before those decisions are needed.
70
Reliable communication is critical during hurricane season. Operators must have clear response plans and reporting procedures in place. BSEE ensures those systems and plans are established before a storm arrives.

What does the future of subsea inspection look like? This system uses sonar and acoustic sensing to locate pipeline connections, align itself, and assess bolt integrity by “feeling” the connection.

Preparation starts before the storm. Offshore operators are required to secure equipment and prepare facilities in advance. BSEE oversees compliance with these standards to reduce risk to personnel, infrastructure, and the environment.

Hurricane season starts June 1. Now is the time to review your preparedness plan. BSEE ensures offshore operators meet strict safety, planning, and reporting requirements before storms form to protect personnel and the environment.

On Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice is never forgotten. We remain committed to the mission they helped defend—protecting lives, the environment, and America’s offshore energy resources.
54
On National Maritime Day, we recognize the vital role of the U.S. maritime workforce. BSEE works alongside industry to ensure offshore operations are conducted safely and responsibly, supporting energy production and protecting people, resources, and the environment.
53
For National Infrastructure Week, BSEE is highlighting its risk-based approach to offshore decommissioning: tracking 92 orphan wells, 18 orphan structures and 98 orphan pipelines, then prioritizing assets with the greatest potential risk.
99
Responsible energy development doesn’t end when production does. Since 2022, BSEE has advanced decommissioning work for 11 orphan wells, 14 orphan pipelines and 1 orphan platform—helping safely remove offshore infrastructure and protect the OCS.
