Someone called someone called someone. The Scotland we’ve come to expect.

This is one of the clearest and most unflinching pieces I’ve read on the reality of devolution after 25 years. @BPyper lays out what too many in public life are unwilling to say out loud - ie - That Scotland’s political culture has become stuck in a cycle of empty rhetoric, centralisation and gimmick policies, while real accountability and genuine improvement in health, education and infrastructure are nowhere to be found.
Whether you agree with his conclusions or not, this article forces us to ask the right questions. Is the problem really that Holyrood doesn’t have enough powers, or that it has failed to use the ones it already holds responsibly?
And if the evidence points to systemic failure, then surely we owe it to ourselves to explore bold alternatives, ones that actually bring power closer to people and rebuild trust in public life.
If you care about Scotland’s future, this is well worth reading in full. It’s time we stopped treating devolution as a sacred cow and started treating it as what it was meant to be - a means to better governance, not an end in itself. @GrahamGGrant

As the story says, plenty of times a ministerial direction might have been demanded from SNP ministers by civil servants.
E.g decision to push through Ferguson ferry contract against advice, which is set to cost taxpayers extra £150m and has so far delivered zero ferries.

New fears have been raised over the politicisation of Scotland’s civil service under the SNP after it emerged officials have not lodged formal objections to ministers’ spending decisions in 15 years.

Brussels’ call for “reciprocity” and “proportionality” intentionally muddles two things: relations between states and contract law. The EU as such hasn’t exported any vaccines. Companies have. @vonderleyen prefers to breach the rule of law than admit to serial incompetence.

Report identified multiple failures in Liverpool's regeneration and planning department, including “awarding of dubious contracts” and “worrying lack of record keeping” in which some documents were dumped in skips and others created retrospectively. theguardian.com/uk-news/2021…

It’s only two years ago that many, many Anglophone commentators openly mocked Spain for bringing charges of sedition against the leaders of a nationalist mob who had sought to overthrow the rule of law and undermine the most basic principles of democracy.

This is now a full-blown crisis. First Scot Gov confirms it's illegal (from tomorrow) for students to go home to families at weekends/hols while new regs in place. Then it backs mandatory draconian rules for all uni students (1000+ now isolating) including threat of expulsion
NUS Scotland President, @MCrilly responds to the deeply concerning guidance for students announced by @uni_scot and endorsed by @scotgov.

ALT Quote from Matt Crilly: Tonight's announcement by Universities Scotland, and endorsed by the Scottish Government, unfairly blames students for the spread of coronavirus... These measures are deeply concerning - not least to those students who rely on income from hospitality jobs... And the rules show a complete disregard for students’ mental health and wellbeing. We need better.

We have seen reports about restrictions on students this evening. We are concerned about the human rights implications & will be seeking an urgent conversation with @scotgov and @uni_scot to establish the nature and legal basis for these restrictions. google.co.uk/amp/s/www.indep…
