Direct Subsidized Loans. Based on financial need. Available only to undergraduate students. Government does not usually charge you interest while you are in school or during your six-month grace period. Direct Unsubsidized Loans. You can qualify regardless of your financial need. Available to undergraduate and graduate students. Government charges interest from the time the loan is disbursed though the life of your loan. Note: As of March 13, 2020, the interest on federal student loans has been set to 0% in response to the coronavirus national emergency.
