Burros played an essential role during the settling and development of the West due to their steady, sure-footed nature. Today, we honor that legacy by managing burros as protected national symbols while fulfilling their legal mandate to keep herd populations in ecological balance with multiple uses. Discover how we collaborate with the USGS to deliver rigorous scientific research that guides the BLM's management of herds and the landscapes they call home.

While public lands are hardy, arid ecosystems have limits. Unchecked herd growth can lead to heavy grazing pressure around scarce water sources, making it vital for us to actively manage herd sizes to preserve land health for all wildlife. In doing so, we fulfill our legal mandate to manage for multiple uses and protects herds and rangeland for generations to come. Wild horses and burros possess unique physical traits, from hard hooves to thick coats, that allow them to adapt to rugged, semi-arid public lands. Understanding these physical adaptations helps us appreciate how wild herds interact with their Western environments. When herd sizes are kept at appropriate management levels, wild horses and burros can thrive, even in harsh environments.

While Freedom and Liberty are traveling the US to educate our community and promote placement of wild horses and burros, the BLM Wild Horse & Burro team is hard at work behind the scenes working to develop thoughtful, collaborative partnerships that benefit the animals we’re tasked with caring for. One of those partnerships is with Branded Equine Services, through their "Operation Branded" program. Their organization provides an 8-week program where veterans, active-duty military, and first responders are each paired with a wild mustang to gentle them, with an option to keep the horse when it’s gentled.
Learn more about their work at our latest "Tales from the Trails" blog post. Thank you to all our partners for their incredible dedication to our community and these amazing animals!

Exciting Update! 🌟
We truly appreciate your patience as we navigated the recent challenges with the Online Corral. We’re thrilled to announce that the Online Corral is back up and running! 🎉 Bidding for our September event kicks off tomorrow at 4 PM MT and will close on Monday, September 28 at 4 PM MT. Be sure to submit your proxy bids throughout the event to ensure your high bid is captured accurately!
Refunds for payments from the previous event are in process, and you can expect to see those within the next 7–10 days as we wrap up our fiscal year.
Our IT team has been hard at work enhancing the system with improved monitoring and technology to ensure a smoother experience. While we’ve made significant upgrades, we want to be transparent that some performance issues may still arise.
We know you’re eager to get started, and it’s crucial for us to keep things moving so these wonderful animals can reach their new homes! 🐴❤️
Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to improve. We can’t wait to kick things off tomorrow! Let’s make this event a success together! 🙌✨
Update from the Road! Freedom and Liberty, the BLM WHB Program 250th Ambassador Team continue their journey across the nation to celebrate America's 250th Anniversary. This time, they stopped in Colorado and Nebraska to walk in their State Fair Parades! What a joy to partake in the festivities and showcase these incredible animals.
A special thanks to Lepik Photography for the lovely pictures of Freedom and Liberty from the Colorado State Fair Parade.
We're headed back on the road in October! We hope to see you in Missouri. Drop a comment if you're headed to Forever Branded Branded Bonanza Missouri.
Meet Wanda the Wonder Donkey! From the vast Arizona range to the hearts of folks in Pennsylvania, she’s proving just how extraordinary a BLM wild burro can be! 🐾
Rescued from the Havasu Herd Management Area in 2024, Wanda has transformed into a therapy animal and community ambassador, and she’s now a national Top Pet semifinalist! 🎉
Her inspiring journey highlights the magic that happens when a wild burro receives a second chance, a dedicated trainer, and a loving forever home. 💖

Little known fact: BLM wild horses can be seen at work in a variety of agencies across the US, including with the BLM Law Enforcement Mounted Patrol Units! Law enforcement agencies rely on the agility and fortitude that make these horses incredible partners. Have you seen these working horses in action? Drop a comment and let us know where!
We know there have been a lot of questions following the issues with the Online Corral's performance and outage, and we completely understand the concern—especially for those who have not yet submitted payment.
We are still working through the system crash and researching exactly what happened and how it may have affected this event and future events. We do not have enough information at this moment to know whether we can rerun the event or proceed with the results we currently have.
For now, the Online Corral site will remain offline, so payments cannot be submitted through the system. We cannot accept payments through an alternative method or location at this time. We want to make sure we have a clear understanding of what happens next before collecting any payments.
We appreciate your patience while we take the time to get this right. We know everyone is eager for an answer (we are too), and we’ll provide another update as soon as we have more information and can let you know the next steps.
Thank you for your understanding!
Attention! 🚨
We are currently experiencing an unexpected outage on the Wild Horse and Burro Online Corral. Our team is working diligently to resolve the issue and get the site back up and running as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time! Stay tuned for updates! 🐴💙
