If anyone can speed the pace of innovation it’s mighty @Rob__Miller - congratulations, Rob, on the launch of @BILCambridge!
Today we launch the Bennett Innovation Lab
@BILCambridge. Its mission comes from a simple imperative: if the UK wants to lead the industries of the future, we must build hardware-intensive technologies at unprecedented speed. #ActionThisDay

Last night in London, we launched our latest policy paper, A New National Purpose: Reimagining UK Science and Technology.
Backed by leading voices, the paper calls for a new public R&D network, putting scientists in charge & backing breakthrough discoveries.

Yesterday felt like a significant moment for the UK.
The @InstituteGC Disruptive Invention Labs report makes a powerful case: if the UK wants to lead industries of the future, we need new institutions built for autonomy, speed & breakthrough invention — not incremental progress
Each year we will launch 2 to 3 bold missions across aviation, defence, and energy, moving from concept to hardware in weeks, not years.
And the positive energy in the room tells us that the urgency of this mission is understood.
With BIL — and the Lovelace Labs to come — momentum is building for a new era of UK innovation.

Scottish physicist Sir Robert Watson-Watt & his assistant Arnold Wilkins pioneered radar, often working under immense pressure and secrecy. Watson-Watt took the initial professional risk of pitching his theory - that radio waves could locate aircraft - to the Air Ministry in 1935
The inspiration came after Wilkins had debunked the idea that the Germans could develop a ‘death ray’ - but realised that radio waves could be used instead to detect aircraft.
On 20 November, we’ll be powering up the insights again.
