And how will the proposed sentence reflect the seriousness of these allegations? The reported agreement also includes restitution for the victims’ mental-health expenses. That’s an important provision, but financial restitution and criminal accountability address different consequences of abuse. One should not be confused with the other. A plea agreement doesn’t automatically mean justice has been denied. But it shouldn’t automatically be treated as justice served, either. That distinction matters. When someone who once carried a badge faces allegations of abusing children, the public has every reason to scrutinize how the justice system responds.
