South Africa’s official unemployment rate has risen to 33.6%, with 345,000 people joining the ranks of the unemployed in the second quarter, pushing the total to 8.5 million. Youth unemployment remains particularly severe, with nearly half of people under 35 out of work, while weak economic growth, rising business costs and infrastructure bottlenecks continue to weigh on hiring. Lisette IJssel de Schepper, Chief Economist at the Bureau for Economic Research (@BERcoza), says reforms in logistics, electricity and water must move from plans to implementation if South Africa is to create enough jobs.
