ALT Today, City Schools students were informed that the school district is installing Evolv weapons detection systems at all high schools effective next Monday. We categorically condemn this decision, but acknowledge its finality. In many ways, the long-term, multi-year project of opposing mandatory safety checks on students has been the defining project of the Baltimore Student Union, and the campaign that brought founding members together after the election.

ALT We are incredibly proud of the role we played in engaging the school district in one of the longest and most robust policy engagement campaigns in recent city history. We want to thank the last three Student Commissioners of City Schools, all BSU members who worked against the implementation of Evolv WDS — Ezra H. ‘22, Quinn K. ‘23, and Ethan E. ‘24. We want to thank BSU members at Digital — Grant T. ‘23 — Patterson — Jazzy B. ‘25 — Mervo — Amaya D. ‘24 — BFHS — Percy J. ’24 —and current & former BSU members on the last three terms of ASCBC — Ellen G. ‘24, Shamir B. ‘26, Saidah E. ‘24, Camille C. ‘24, Yasmine B. ‘24, and countless other student leaders for their work on this.

ALT To the student body, this AP & final exam season will be the hardest we have seen since the COVID-19 shutdown of our city. Plan to show up to school early next week. There will be delays. If you require accommodation for your disability or cultural clothing, reach out to your SGA for support in navigating this new policy. Do not hesitate to contact this page. We are here to support you, and to minimize the pervasive effects this policy decision will have on students. We will adapt. We will survive. We will overcome.

ALT To our coalition & movement partners who have chosen to get actively involved in the May primary, we urge consideration of a critical question: how will you resolve to organize beyond the plane of transactional political endorsement? Against the judgment of many of our allies, we did not issue a public-facing candidate questionnaire, as is typical in the electoral space. Instead, we met with candidates directly, allowed our rank & file members to question them one on one, and engaged in frank and earnest conversation. Accountability is about building relationships that last beyond an arbitrary election date.

ALT We are not discouraging individual members from getting involved in progressive campaigns that matter deeply to them, and would not only encourage our members, and all high school students 17 or 18, to explore all of the candidates named in this statement, but urge them to register to vote and cast a primary ballot in May. Moreover, we will continue organizing for the With Us For Us ballot initiative that we have endorsed. As an organization, we will continue agitating for our theory of change in Baltimore: one that is electoral, non-electoral, and embraces a diversity of tactics on the road to transformative change in our city. We owe it to the students coming after us to try.
