For the first time in eight years, FIDE is guaranteed to have a new president. Three strong candidates and three well-funded campaigns. It is natural to focus on personalities, but I hope this campaign becomes a genuine debate about the future of chess.
♟ Three Presidential Tickets Submitted to FIDE Office Ahead of 2026 Elections Today at 18:00 CEST, the nomination period for the 2026 FIDE Presidential Election officially closed. Before the deadline, the FIDE Office received three presidential tickets (listed in alphabetical order by the presidential candidate): ▪️ Mr. Jan Henric Buettner for President and Mr. Malcolm Pein for Deputy President; ▪️ Mr. Wadim Rosenstein for President and Mr. Gordon Tang for Deputy President; ▪️ Mr. Timur Turlov for President and Mr. Viswanathan Anand for Deputy President. In accordance with Article 21 of the FIDE Electoral Rules (Election of the President and Deputy President), the Electoral Commission (ELC) will now conduct a preliminary examination of the submitted candidacies and approve the list of valid presidential tickets. The approved list will be published on the FIDE website and made available to all Member Federations. As part of this process, the ELC will verify that each application contains all information and declarations required under Article 5.2 of the Electoral Rules and that all eligibility requirements set out in Article 4.1 have been satisfied. The 2026 FIDE Presidential Election will take place on 26 September 2026 during the FIDE General Assembly in 🇺🇿 Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Each Member Federation represented at the General Assembly is entitled to one vote. @JanHBuettner @WadimRosenstein @TurlovforChess

Nice - a new World Championship concept in chess! The Total Chess World Championship Tour that demands a champion prove themselves across three disciplines, including a new format - fast classic. A huge, innovative step that perfectly complements the classical title.
♟🤩 Norway Chess Launches New World Championship – Approved by FIDE The new championship, titled the Total Chess World Championship Tour, will consist of four events each year and crown a combined champion across three disciplines – Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz chess. “We expect this to become one of the most prestigious events in the entire chess Calendar,” says Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and of the new championship. Key Highlights: ▪ A brand-new World Championship format in chess, organized by @NorwayChess, has been officially approved by the International Chess Federation, FIDE. ▪ The Total Chess World Championship Tour will crown an overall champion across three disciplines: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz. The winner will be crowned FIDE World Combined Champion. ▪ The tour will consist of four tournaments per year in various global cities. ▪ Minimum $2.7M annual prize pool across the Tour ($750k per event for the first three events; $450k for the Finals), plus performance bonuses. ▪ A pilot tournament is planned for fall 2026, with the first full championship season in 2027. 🔗 Read more: fide.com/norway-chess-launch…

Boris Spassky, one of the greatest chess players of all time and a true gentleman of the game, has passed away. My dad knew him, and I had the honor of meeting him (and Fischer!) in Belgrade and Sveti Stefan in 1992. I was only six, but remember a bit.

Magnus Carlsen withdraws from the World Rapid and Blitz after refusing to change his jeans, which are prohibited under tournament regulations. (A rule which has been in place for several years now.) It's a shame when jeans cost you a World Championship title.

Today the preparation consists of using the engine to see what the others know and are expected to know, and then to use it to discover less well-trodden paths. From my upcoming article for @BCMChess on chess preparation.

Urgent visa appeal to the Canadian Government regarding the FIDE Candidates Tournament The most prestigious tournament in the chess world, the FIDE Candidates, which will determine the challengers for the World Champion title in both the Open and Women’s Categories, is set to take place from April 3 – 22 in Toronto, Canada. This is the first time in the history of chess that the most prestigious tournament is due to be hosted in Canada, recognizing the country’s growing role in the chess world. Regrettably, players from various countries worldwide, who submitted their visa applications few months ago, have not yet received any updates on their status. With only a month remaining till the FIDE Candidates Tournament, there are grave concerns about the timely arrival of the players to Toronto. Recognizing the popularity of the game in the country, and its growing role in the chess world, we kindly ask the Canadian Government for support in urgently addressing this matter. Ensuring the safe and timely arrival of players is crucial for the success and integrity of the FIDE Candidates Tournament and for promoting Canada as a host of the most important chess tournament of the year, which will be followed by millions of spectators worldwide. @CitImmCanada @MarcMillerVM

Russian Arkady Dvorkovich has been reelected as President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). A convincing victory: 157 votes vs 16 for his opponent, the Ukrainian GM Baryshpolets. While this isn't surprising for the chess world, it is surprising given everything else.
Former Russian deputy prime minister Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term as president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) on Sunday, defeating a Ukrainian who had criticised him over Moscow's actions in Ukraine. reut.rs/3df6gDv
