I'm pleased to see my report with the @BCHumanist Association on unconstitutional prayers in #Ontario municipal council meetings having an impact! Let's make sure our council meetings are welcoming to everyone, regardless of their beliefs. #Secular newmarkettoday.ca/local-news…

I'm glad to see our report on unconstitutional prayer in #Ontario municipal council meetings making headlines!
“True neutrality doesn’t grant privilege to religious or non-religious views, it remains silent on the issue, and that’s one of the ways you can make sure everyone is included.”

We released our latest report yesterday: Open for Unconstitutional Business. Nearly half of municipalities in Ontario opened their 2018 inaugural council meetings with a prayer, despite the practice being ruled unconstitutional in 2015. Read it now: bchumanist.ca/open_for_uncon…

This kind of content has no place in municipal council meetings, that should be welcoming to all, regardless of belief or lack thereof! Governments in #CdnPoli have a duty of religious neutrality, and #OntarioPoli municipalities are in violation of this duty.

The worst offenders. Laurentian Valley: Every council meeting the Mayor reads the Lord's Prayer Whitewater Region: Every council meeting begins with a prayer to "Almighty God." Pickering: Every meeting begins with "Creator of all."

📢New Report Alert! Our study identified 156 #OntarioPoli municipalities that included prayer in their 2018 inaugural meetings. This is an unconstitutional practice (as per the Supreme Court ruling in Saguenay, 2015). #Humanism #Secular #CdnPoli

Last but not least in my series looking at #religious traditions in #Canada through the #2021Census data on #religion: the (large) group of individuals who respond they have no religion when asked by Stats Can. #Secularism #secular

As much as we applaud those who fight injustice, another indicator that change is needed is seeing who defends the unacceptable and how they go about doing it. Renowned feminist author and humanist @JessicaValenti agrees with us in this week’s #MotivationalMonday quote.

It was very disappointing to see prayer included in the agenda of the Parksville inaugural meeting. Municipal council meetings should be welcoming to all people, regardless of religious belief or lack thereof. vm.tiktok.com/ZMFfq1f84/

#Ontario! My home province, and home to the most religious pluralism in the country. 16% of the population affiliates with a #religion other than #Christianity in the province in 2021, with #Islam being the largest at 7%.

All the more reason that municipal council meetings & sittings of the #BCLegislature should not begin with "prayers" #bcpoli #BritishColumbia
According to the 2021 population census, 34.6 per cent of people in Canada claimed no religious affiliation, while in B.C. that number jumped to 52.4 per cent — the highest it's ever been. buff.ly/3DnDIAS
