Speaking on the topic, “Breaking Boundaries: Shaping the Future of the Girl Child,” ASP Oluborode addressed students, school administrators and staff on the progress made in advancing women’s rights, gender equality and access to education. He highlighted the need to protect girls against child marriage, discrimination, abuse and other harmful practices, drawing attention to applicable legal safeguards, including the Child Rights Act as domesticated in relevant jurisdictions.
He encouraged the students to draw inspiration from the achievements of Nigerian women across various professional fields, emphasising that gender should never be a barrier to excellence. He stressed that education, discipline, self-confidence and determination are essential to personal development and national progress, urging the girls to pursue their ambitions with integrity and purpose.
The students were also sensitised to the dangers of cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, negative peer influence and other social vices capable of undermining their education, safety and future aspirations. They were encouraged to reject child marriage, speak up against abuse and seek assistance from trusted adults and appropriate authorities whenever their rights or safety are threatened.
In response, the students pledged to shun social vices, resist child marriage, uphold their rights and responsibilities, and remain committed to academic excellence.
The management of both institutions commended the Nigeria Police Force for the initiative. The Principal of Baptist Girls’ College, Mrs Osunbara, and Mrs A. 📅OCTOBER 10, 2026 — STORY 1
💔 I SAW A POST ON FACEBOOK ABOUT A SHOP OWNER ARRESTED AFTER A CUSTOMER DIED… AND IT BROUGHT BACK A PAINFUL MEMORY.
Yesterday, I came across a post on Facebook by The People’s Parliament that made me stop scrolling.
Someone was asking a lawyer a question that touched a very sensitive part of life in Nigeria.
According to the post, a customer had reportedly collapsed and died at the person’s sister’s shop, and the police arrested the sister.
The person wanted to know whether that was lawful, especially when witnesses were reportedly present and the customer appeared to have collapsed on his own.
Then came the question that caught my attention:
“Would the police also arrest a manager if this happened in a bank or a big corporate organisation?”
The lawyer, Atanda, explained that larger businesses may have CCTV cameras, access records and staff members who can help investigators establish what happened. Small businesses may not have those same resources.
He also mentioned some CCTV options he had bought at Alaba: a single-camera setup for ₦45,000, a double-camera setup for ₦55,000 and a triple-camera setup for ₦65,000. He clarified that he wasn’t selling cameras; he was simply sharing his experience.
As I read the post, something happened.
I remembered an incident that happened to me on June 23, 2026.
An experience I witnessed with my own eyes.
An experience that left me with questions about human life, family, religion, justice and how quickly an ordinary day can turn into a tragedy.
Let me tell you what happened.
That day, there had been a light shower of rain.
I was inside my sister’s shop when I suddenly heard the sound of somebody falling.
I rushed outside to see what had happened.
About three shops away, I saw an elderly woman who had fallen into a small erosion channel filled with rainwater.
Without thinking twice, I rushed to help bring her out.
We tried to help her sit up.
We called out to her.
But she wasn’t responding.
People started gathering around us. Everybody wanted to help. We hoped she would regain consciousness, but the situation was frightening.
Someone searched her bag, brought out her phone and began calling the contacts saved on it.
We needed to reach her family.
And what happened next was something I still find difficult to forget.
The number saved as “My Mother” was called.
According to what we heard, when the person was informed that something had happened to the owner of the phone, she denied knowing her.
We tried the number saved as “My Dad.”
At first, it wasn’t connecting.
Eventually, someone answered.
But immediately the person heard what had happened, the call was disconnected.
We tried other numbers.
Friends. Acquaintances. Other contacts.
We were desperately trying to reach somebody who could come and identify this woman.
Just imagine the situation.
An elderly woman was lying there, unresponsive, and a group of strangers was struggling to contact the people whose numbers she had saved as family.
I kept wondering what her story was.
Who was she?
Where was she coming from?
Where was she going?
And why were we struggling so much to reach someone close to her?
At that point, I decided to contact the police.
I called the Ogun State Police PRO, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi. @BBabaseyi
He answered my call and directed me to contact the DPO in charge of the area.
I explained that I didn’t have the DPO’s number, and he sent it to me by text message.
I appreciated his response. In a moment like that, having someone answer and direct you to the appropriate person matters.
Before I could reach the DPO, however, somebody informed us that a respected elderly man in the neighbourhood had already contacted the police.
Eventually, the police arrived.
They examined the woman and told us she was no longer breathing.
They covered her body.
