🧬Personalised mRNA cancer vaccines are now being used to train the body’s immune system to recognise & eradicate cancer cells.
Despite the potential Aust researchers haven’t had the infrastructure to build these vaccines, leading to a gap in the local drug development pipeline.

The discoveries by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman – awarded the 2023 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine – were critical for developing effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 during the pandemic that began in early 2020.
Through their groundbreaking findings, this year’s laureates have fundamentally changed our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system. They have contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.
