𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝟭𝟴𝟰𝟳 Webster Clay Ball was born on a farm in Fredericktown, Ohio, to Aaron Ball and Sidney Ann Clay Ball. In 1869 he began his apprenticeship as a watchmaker and jeweler in his hometown, and in 1874 he joined the Deuber Watch Case Company. In 1879 he married Florence Young and acquired the jewelry business that became Webb C. Ball Co. in 1881. When Standard Time was introduced in 1883, Ball used time signals from the U.S. Naval Observatory at his Cleveland store to set watches and clocks accurately, an early practical use of precise timekeeping. The 1891 Kipton railroad accident, a head-on collision about 40 miles from Cleveland caused in part by a defective crew watch, placed his name in the history of railroad timekeeping. Appointed Chief Time Inspector, he reformed watches and time service across the railroads: new rules, trained inspectors, and timepieces built to the new standard. His standards raised accuracy and safety, and were adopted by leading makers including Hamilton, Waltham, and Elgin. In 1922, at the age of 73, Webb C. Ball’s life came to a close. The timekeeping standards he established, and his contribution to railroad safety, long outlived him.
