"Grass-fed or grain-fed." Right, let's clear this up, because half the internet is losing sleep over a distinction that barely exists. Nearly every beef cow on earth spends most of its life on grass. All of it. The calf on the mother, the growing months out on pasture, chewing the stuff off a hillside. Especially here. British cattle are out on grass because grass is what these islands grow, on land that grows nothing else. That's the default. That's the whole first act for basically every cow you'll ever eat. So when someone waves "grass-fed versus grain-fed" at you like it's the great moral choice of our time, they're not talking about the life of the animal. They're talking about the last few months. The finishing. Grass-finished or grain-finished, the final stretch before the animal goes. That's the entire argument. Not grass against grain. The closing chapter against the closing chapter. And here's the bit they leave out. That closing chapter is run through the one digestive system on the planet purpose-built to handle it. Four stomachs. A cow can take grain, grass, silage, the lot, and turn it into the same complete, iron-rich, B12-loaded, protein-dense package either way. It is the single best machine we have for dealing with those final-months grains. The difference the finish makes to what lands on your plate is real, but it is marginal. A bit more of this, a touch less of that. A rounding error, wearing a rosette. Now step back and look at the actual gap that matters. The difference between grass-finished and grain-finished beef is a whisper next to the difference between the worst beef in the shop and the best chicken breast in the shop. One is dense, complete, real food whichever way it was finished. The other is lean white padding you have to season into having a personality. That's the comparison worth caring about, and it's not close. So buy the beef your wallet and your tastebuds prefer. Grass-finished if you love it and can afford it. Ordinary supermarket tray if that's the week you're having. Both are streets ahead of the thing the gatekeepers would rather you fret about instead of eating. Eat the beef. Any of it. Stop losing sleep.
