Israel has knowingly given MSF and our Palestinian colleagues an impossible choice: either we provide staff information or abandon hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who need vital medical care. To continue providing aid in Gaza and the West Bank, MSF has informed Israeli authorities that we are prepared to share a defined list of Palestinian staff and international staff names, subject to clear parameters with staff safety at the core. This is an exceptional measure. This follows extensive discussions with our Palestinian colleagues and would only be carried out with the express agreement of the individuals concerned. Our priority remains the safety of our staff while continuing to provide essential healthcare to those in dire need: msf.org/msf-statement-staff-…

On Sunday night, Al-Helou maternity hospital in Gaza City, which our teams support, sustained severe collateral damage from nearby attacks. This came despite multiple assurances from Israeli forces that the hospital was not in danger.  At the time of the impacts, inside Al-Helou hospital there were, among others, 12 newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit, 5 patients in internal medicine, 2 obstetric patients and 54 staff members, according to the Ministry of Health staff.  Due to the proximity of tanks to the hospital, medical staff decided to relocate patients to the basement for their safety. This decision prevented patients receiving shrapnel injuries.  During the attacks, which continued throughout most of the night, a pregnant patient went into labour. She delivered under extremely stressful conditions and experienced postpartum complications. Both mother and baby are now stable.  A maternity hospital should be a place of hope and new beginnings—but in Gaza they are overshadowed by stress and uncertainty. Even in the midst of an offensive, hospitals should be protected. We call for an immediate halt to the violence, and concrete measures to protect civilians.

Earlier today, two Israeli strikes hit Nasser hospital in Gaza, killing at least 20 people. Jerome Grimaud, our emergency coordinator in Gaza, shares his reaction: “We denounce in the strongest possible terms Israel’s horrendous attacks on the Nasser medical complex today – the only partially functioning public hospital in the south of Gaza. Israeli forces killed at least 20 people and injured 50 more in consecutive strikes, including healthcare workers, rescuers, and journalists. “Among them was Mariam Abu Dagga, a freelance photographer who frequently worked with MSF. We are heartbroken by her death. Mariam leaves behind a son who must now grow up without his mother. At least four other journalists were also killed today. “Some MSF staff members were forced to shelter in the laboratory as Israel repeatedly struck the building amidst rescue efforts. We are outraged as the Israeli forces continue to attack healthcare workers and journalists with impunity. “For the past 22 months, we have watched as healthcare facilities have been levelled, journalists silenced, and healthcare workers buried beneath the rubble by the Israeli forces. As Israel continues to shun international law, the only witnesses of their genocidal campaign are deliberately being targeted. It must stop now.”

🚨 The Israeli forces are increasing their carnage in Gaza City, while famine has been declared in the city by the integrated food security phase classification. Amande Bazerolle, the head of our emergency response in Gaza, shares her reaction to the current situation in Gaza City: “We are horrified to see the Israeli forces increasing their carnage across Gaza City, as they sweep through neighbourhoods, leaving destruction in their wake. At the same time, continued strikes are forcing people, including MSF staff, to flee their homes once again, and we are seeing displacement across Gaza City.    “At our clinics in the area, we have seen high patient numbers this week as people move away from the recent bombardments in neighbourhoods, such as Az-Zaytoun.  “All this is happening while famine in Gaza City has been declared by the integrated food security phase classification (IPC). You couldn't imagine something more cynical: people being starved as the Israeli forces invade and destroy any life that remains. “This will lead to a complete and utter humanitarian disaster. As the Israeli forces accelerate their campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing by expanding their military ground invasion into Gaza City, Palestinians trapped there face starvation, disease, and death.   “We have seen this repeatedly before: the mass destruction of civilian infrastructure, the forced displacement of millions into ever-shrinking, uninhabitable areas, and the systematic denial of food, water and aid. “We call on the Israeli forces to stop their military invasion and reiterate our call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire.”

On 16 Aug, MSF had to reduce teams & suspend all activities at Zalingei Hospital in Central Darfur, Sudan after a violent armed assault inside the facility. A hand grenade in front of the emergency room killed 1 person & injured 5, including a Ministry of Health staff member under MSF incentives. This is one of many attacks blocking vital aid. In 2 years of conflict, @WHO recorded 156 attacks on healthcare, causing 318 deaths & 273 injuries. msf.org/sudan-msf-suspends-a…

Yesterday, six children arrived at our reconstructive surgery hospital in Jordan after being evacuated from Gaza, in coordination with the Jordanian Ministry of Health. Among them is the five-year-old son of an MSF staff member who was injured in a blast amidst the ongoing violence. Two of the newly arrived patients are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, a direct consequence of the prolonged siege on Gaza, and the deliberate starvation of the people trapped there. The patients, aged 17 and 12, have been placed on a gradual feeding protocol to help stabilise their condition and prevent complications.  “One of the young boys who arrived at the hospital was clutching water bottles, terrified of losing them. This small act speaks volumes about the deprivation of food and water in Gaza, and the trauma children are facing,” says Daad Mnezil, MSF mental health activity manager. Since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal campaign on Gaza, we have received only 32 children through medical evacuation to our specialised hospital in Jordan – a tiny drop in the ocean compared to the massive needs. According to WHO, more than 14,800 people are in urgent need of medical evacuation. We call on the Israeli authorities to ensure medical evacuations for all Palestinians in need of medical care, including their caretakers, while ensuring that all patients and their caregivers are guaranteed a safe, voluntary and dignified return to Gaza. At the same time, Israel must immediately and unconditionally lift its siege on Gaza and allow lifesaving humanitarian aid to flow freely and safely to those in need.

On 27 and 28 July, MSF-supported clinics treated hundreds of people injured at food distribution sites and from ongoing attacks in Gaza. On 27 July alone, medical teams at the MSF-supported Sheikh Radwan clinic in north Gaza treated over 150 patients from five different mass casualty incidents. 54 people suffered gunshot wounds, crush injuries and stabbings while scrambling for aid. Dangerous “aid points” that distribute tiny quantities of supplies are causing death and injury and are draining exhausted medical teams. Al Zawaida field hospital in Deir Al Balah is over capacity, with no space for new patients. Within three weeks, the field hospital increased its bed capacity from 70 to 115 beds, but this still doesn’t come close to meeting the massive medical needs. The Ministry of Health and nearby hospitals are also overwhelmed. Most trauma cases require major surgeries for limb and abdominal injuries, yet we have no stock of external fixators to heal broken bones and we are running out of other supplies, including blood and critical antibiotics. The ongoing blockade and the dangerous and disorganised practices of providing the bare minimum of food to a starving population are fuelling desperation and internal violence, while placing an unbearable burden on Gaza’s collapsing health system.

Jean Guy Vataux is our Emergency Coordinator in Gaza. He describes why airdrops of aid are not the most effective method for delivering aid. “Using airdrops for the delivery of humanitarian aid is a futile initiative that smacks of cynicism. The roads are there, the trucks are there, the food and medicine are there, everything is ready to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza just a few kilometres away. All that is needed is for Israeli authorities to decide to facilitate its arrival - expedite the clearance procedures, allow the entry of goods at scale, and coordinate to permit safe collection and delivery. Only then can we begin to resolve the starvation we are seeing.    “Airdrops are notoriously ineffective and dangerous. They carry far less supply than the 20 tonnes you can get on a truck. At the moment, two million people are trapped in a tiny piece of land, which makes up just 12 per cent of the whole Strip - if anything lands in this area, people will inevitably be injured. On the other hand, if the airdrops land in areas where Israel has issued displacement orders, people will be forced to enter militarised zones – once again risking their lives for food.”

On 20 July, massive displacement orders were issued by Israeli forces in parts of Deir Al Balah, an area that was considered the last remotely safe area in Gaza. According to OCHA, an estimated 50,000 - 80,000 people, who have already been displaced multiple times, were forced to move again and are being squeezed into an ever-shrinking space. These orders affected our staff living in Deir Al Balah. 36 Palestinian colleagues in our Mawasi clinic had to abruptly leave a busy health facility that was treating an influx of patients from GHF distribution sites, to evacuate their families. This new displacement order has also impacted one of the main lifelines for water distribution in southern Gaza. Today water distribution trucks could not reach the plant, and these orders will put at risk anyone who tries to distribute water from here in the near future. Water plants and distribution systems are an essential lifeline for people in Gaza and must be protected. Displacement orders have rapidly expanded across the Strip, from the north to the Middle Area in Deir Al Balah, now covering over 87% as a no-go military zone. Around 2 million Palestinians now have less than 13% of their land accessible for shelter.
