Did you know: Cannabis use in ancient times spans a broad spectrum of cultural, medicinal, and ritualistic practices across various civilizations: 🇨🇳 In China ,Cannabis, known as "Dàmá," has been documented in China as far back as 500 BCE, where it was used in ritual mortuary ceremonies. The Chinese pharmacopoeia, attributed to the mythical Shen Nung around 2800 BC, listed cannabis for its medicinal properties, including its use as an anesthetic by the surgeon Hua Tuo in the 2nd century AD. 🇪🇬 in Ancient Egypt evidence suggests cannabis was used for medicinal purposes, such as treating glaucoma, hemorrhoids, and inflammation. An interesting artifact is a statue of Rameses II with what some interpret as a cannabis leaf above the goddess Seshat, hinting at its spiritual or symbolic significance. Scythians: This ancient nomadic group, described by Herodotus, used cannabis in steam baths for purification and in funerary rituals. They would throw cannabis onto hot stones to inhale the fumes, which Herodotus noted made them "shout for joy." In Ancient India 🇮🇳 Cannabis has been intertwined with religious practices, particularly in the worship of Shiva. It was consumed in various forms, including "bhang," a drink made from cannabis, milk, and spices, used in religious festivals and for spiritual enlightenment. In Greece and Rome While not as extensively documented, cannabis was known. Pliny the Elder wrote about its use for earaches and gout, indicating its medicinal application in Roman times. In central Asia Cannabis was part of their culture, used in both medicinal and ritual contexts, suggesting its widespread acceptance across different ancient societies in the region. From these ancient uses, cannabis spread globally through trade routes, with evidence of its use in various forms from Africa to the Americas, often for its fibers (hemp) but also for medicinal and psychoactive properties. The historical use of cannabis highlights its versatility, not just as a recreational substance but as a deeply integrated component of ancient societies' medicinal, spiritual, and cultural practices. This rich history underscores why cannabis has been termed one of humanity's oldest relationships with a domesticated plant, influencing laws, cultures, and economies through the ages.
