75 years ago, General Neyland led the Tennessee Volunteers in the 1951 Cotton Bowl against the Texas Longhorns. Before the game, just as the Vols were about to run out of the tunnel, the Texas band blared “Eyes of Texas” just yards away. General Neyland stood before the team, quietly, listening to that janky tune. He simply said, “When this one’s over, they’ll be playing the Tennessee Waltz.” Laughter and cheers rang out, and the boys in Tennessee Orange went out and played some damn good football. Taking down the #3 Longhorns 20-14, a classic from General Robert Neyland’s hefty resume of victories from his historic career. This Saturday, 75 years later, the Tennessee Volunteers charge into “The House That Neyland Built” with 102,000 Tennessee fans at their backs, to take on the #1 Texas Longhorns. All that to say… I’m fucking pumped.
