BOOK COVER REVEAL!!!! About 4 years ago, @tony_breu and I set out to write a book that would inspire wonder in the remarkable resilience of the human body. That project became “Why Doesn’t Your Stomach Digest Itself?”, a book about the magic of homeostasis, how the body maintains and heals itself (and knows that it needs to heal itself), and can endure extreme challenges if necessary (think altitude acclimatization, freediving, ultramarathoning). The imperative to explore and understand this intrinsic physical resilience feels more urgent than ever in the age of AI and biohacking. Coming March 16, 2027 from @wwnorton. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it. The link to pre-order your copy is in my profile and it’s available from all booksellers!! wwnorton.com/books/978132411…

Our clinical trial of AMIE, a patient-facing AI system, was just published in The Lancet. I want to explain what *I* think this study ACTUALLY means. It's about a fundamental question: how do we know that clinical AI works? 🧵⬇️ xitter.cf/Google/status/21083245…
Our medical research system, AMIE, is the first patient-facing conversational diagnostic tool of its kind to be studied prospectively in a real-world clinical setting. In a study, published today in @TheLancet, we found that when patients chatted with AMIE before an in-person appointment, the interaction built their confidence and helped them organize their thoughts. And physicians who reviewed the information from the patient conversation got more time back to focus on collaborative care and shared decision-making instead of digging through data.

Did President Franklin Delano Roosevelt actually have polio? Modern re-analysis of his case presentation suggests that perhaps he actually had a different diagnosis. 1/ Should I consider atrial fibrillation a risk factor for pulmonary embolism? If the right atrium is fibrillating, can’t thrombus form? And if it does, can’t it migrate to the pulmonary vasculature, leading to a pulmonary embolism? Let's examine these questions...

I'll never get over the physics of how an electron microscope works. It's phenomenal! It somehow not only exceeds the zoom limits of the photon engineered microscopes down to the very micro matter level, but it also yields an insanely higher resolution too?? God-like tech fr

Physiologist here. Your VO2 *is* lower in heat. You divert more blood to skin for cooling and reach peak HR faster with lower oxygen extraction. (More blood going to skin, less to muscle). This isn’t “lower fitness” though it’s a normal adaptation.
A dropping VO2max number in the summer is one of the most common false alarms in the running world, especially if you have a Garmin watch. Here's how you can stop this number from driving you crazy. Link: lifehacker.com/health/why-yo…

Why do 13% of people on ticagrelor report breathlessness? Avi Cooper breaks it down in his usual fashion. #ticagrelor @acutemedicine
1/THREAD Shortness of breath is a known side effect of the antiplatelet medication ticagrelor. This association surprised me when I first learned about it. Why would a drug that inhibits platelet function also lead to dyspnea?

3/ In PLATO, 13.8% of participants receiving ticagrelor reported dyspnea when first starting on the drug (significantly more than in the placebo group). Typically dyspnea lasted <1 week and very few patients had to stop ticagrelor due to this side effect. nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…

10/ Although not related to dyspnea necessarily, ticagrelor's adenosinergic effects also have been shown to increase the incidence of prolonged (though often asymptomatic) ventricular pauses. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

11/ One wrinkle to the story that really shocked me was that ticagrelor has been investigated as a potential antimicrobial agent.... Stay tuned for more to come!
