Our rural areas in this country aren't full of noble, living-off-the-land farmers either. It's mostly just people living in abandoned towns going back and forth from Walmart in F-150s.

One thought I had is that there's so much conglomeration that companies will just raise prices on the things everyone needs and attach the extra cost of warehousing things nobody wants to them, because most companies are big enough to sell both. Is that a possibility?

In econ 101, I would expect companies to lower prices to drive up demand so they don't have to warehouse as much junk. But this article seems to be indicating that they'll do the exact opposite. How would raising prices on things nobody wants fix the underlying lack of demand?
