Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in every case, without exception. It violates the right to life and the right to live free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. California has gone nearly two decades without an execution. Yet more than 550 people there are still under sentence of death, over a quarter of all death sentences in the U.S. Governor Newsom has said: “My ultimate goal is to end the death penalty in California.” He leaves office in January 2027. The UN opposes capital punishment in all circumstances, and recent events have made the reasons crystal clear: it is incompatible with the right to life, and can involve torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. I urge all countries to end executions now.
