Doomers will say this and then claim that Actually, a sufficiently intelligent AI could centrally plan an economy without issue
It’s such a tragedy that friedrich hayek wrote all this amazing stuff about spontaneous orders and how to understand them, all of which is shockingly relevant to ai and should cause you to take “ai as abnormal technology” very seriously, yet Hayek’s most direct intellectual heirs have a tendency to spend their time purveying cope-laden, first-stage-of-grief views on ai, or at least indulging those views more seriously than they should out of a bizarre loyalty to american megacorp lobbyist talking points.
Bottom line, it's going to all work out. You know why? It always does.
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had
with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works

NEW from the @nypost: Ilhan Omar's congressional staff got her official birth year changed from 1981 to 1982 in May 2019, months after she took office.
Why does one year matter? She says she became a citizen through her father at 17, in 2000.
Born in 1981, she'd have been 18 that whole year and one year is the difference between her citizenship story working and not.
"For derivative citizenship, two things have to be true — one, her father had to naturalize; and two, she still had to be a minor."
That one year matters a lot.

lmao some Indian tourists are posting videos from Serbia and Albanians are in the comments pretending to be Serbian and telling them to stay in Serbia, while Serbians are in the comments pretending to be Albanian and inviting them to move to Albania.
and these guys have no idea about the Balkan race war they’ve just unleashed and they’re just cluelessly liking all the comments

One of the most shockingly dumb ideas I’ve ever read.
Have you ever thought that it's really weird you can’t add pictures to laws? I see so many laws that would be clearer and more logical if we could just include a map or a blueprint.
Congress recently passed my initiative to bring legislation into the 21st century and explore including images in the text of bills–this is a long overdue step in the legislative process.

Americans should not be forced to breathe hazardous air year after year because Canada refuses to properly manage its forests. This is no longer a one-time emergency—it’s becoming an annual public health crisis. That is unacceptable.
I am reaching out to Members of Parliament and the Canadian Ambassador to demand answers about the devastating impact Canada’s forest management failures are having on Western New York, the Southern Tier, and communities across the United States. Millions of Americans are paying the price for policies they had no role in creating.
We can all accept that nature is unpredictable. But repeated failures to reduce wildfire risk and manage forests responsibly are a policy choice. The United States cannot continue accepting dangerous air quality every summer as the new normal.
Canada must take meaningful action to prevent these catastrophic wildfires and protect both Canadians and Americans. If it refuses to do so, there should be consequences. Our citizens should not be forced to suffer because another nation’s government failed to do its job.

While I understand Ro Khanna’s anger and frustration, and the demand for Israel to restrain the settlers, there is a dangerous thinking behind the cult of force, the assumption that every security problem can be solved by the use of brute force and violence, which has lately taken hold of the international community.
In 2005 Israel removed all settlers from the Gaza Strip by force, but this didn’t help. If anything, a new and more radicalized generation of settlers grew up, which has only ever known a settler-free Gaza Strip. The paradigm of evacuations is a dead end, the ever more radical settlers show how unsustainable it is.
While the righteous anger against radical elements among the settler community is understandable, despite all the crackdowns, evacuations and international sanctions, there are more settlers today in the West Bank than 20 years ago.
Perhaps ever more violence and only sticks but no carrots is not the solution? Perhaps both sides should recognize that nobody is going anywhere, and work toward building a prosperous and peaceful future together?
Israeli settlers, brandishing American made M4s, detained me & other Americans on my trip to Palestine.
When the IDF arrived, they sided with the settlers & continued our detention.
They made a huge mistake.

I’ve never engaged with the daycare discourse before, but if daycare is so bad, can you explain why my son is grinning, laughing, squealing with joy every time we drop him off? in every picture they send? when we spy on him through the daycare window? Please help me understand
Daycare?
Don't do it. Just don't do it.
I realize if you are a single parent you have significant challenges, but still, there are better alternatives to typical daycare.
For married couples, especially, don't do it. Commit to no daycare. Figure out a way to live off one income and be there for your baby. The enfant NEEDS the regular, consistent skin to skin touch of the mom and the regular, consistent verbal gentle reassurance of love, peace, safety, and joy over him or her. Dads strongly need to be part of this as well.
The first 2-3 years, starting at birth (even in the womb, frankly), are hyper critical for the child. Daycare in its typical iteration (hours a day, 5 days a week, for months/years) greatly undermines and hurts the physical, psychological, and soul wellbeing of the child.
Just don't do it. Say no to daycare.

Very weird that cover page states "On Emergency Application to the Supreme Court of Virginia." That's the styling for a petition for a writ of certiorari, but it makes no sense to say that the emergency application is "to" the Supreme Court of Virginia.
