The Spotify/UMG discourse has been fascinating to watch. What a lot of people are glossing over is how Suno structurally changed music and streaming in such a short period of time. Spotify was reactionary. The industry's hand was forced. Suno is valued somewhere around $5 Billion. Approximately 45% of new music uploads are AI generated or have heavy AI elements (according to Deezer). Eventually the machine gets so big that the only thing it can do is ravenously feed itself to stay structurally relevant. The locked down music industry has been peddling crap for decades, manufacturing popularity, and raking in money while smaller artists were pushed aside and unheard. The moment people found the freedom to create something in the style they wanted to listen to, it threatened the gatekeepers, and they had to pivot. The threat to their businss model came in the form of Suno's valuation. And to the average listener who isn't in the trenches of the pro/anti AI fight? They don't care either, and the vast majority cannot tell the difference between a song that has heavy AI construction and one that doesn't. Just like the vast majority can't tell the difference between a real Monet and a fake one. They just want to listen to a catchy song. 🤷‍♂️
