Hum drum hum drum My heart in winter beats so slowly,  Sometimes I forget to Get out of bed, it's not easy Going through the motions of life: Eating, cleaning my house, talking to friends About what I've done this week An existential meta-analysis on existence  Bringing me further from the corporeal truth That I'm an organic, multicellular organism Moving away from pain and towards  Nourishment, just trying to stay alive. To stay alive. It's very simple, really. It's the only real thing there is and yet, when I'm here--stripped of all superfluous meanings, it just doesn't seem worth it at all. #vss365

No #savant here to lead the ages in technology and culture. Not a brain cell to spare. Everything is fried. Silly. Just a little woman left, lying in her sick bed-- reading odd little books and making strange little art. #vss365 #poetry

Litmus Test Rap Sheet People talk about life being a test, but it's actually true. The questions are scattered through your life, randomized--like they don't want you to know it's a test.  You can find the questions quickly. There's usually a gut punch--laced with nausea when you get them wrong. You are not supposed to fail this test, but you don't get a study guide either.  The first question I remember: A sweet little boy that followed me around the schoolyard like I was his mommy. I could see his heart--vulnerable and tender, so I stuck out my leg and made him eat dirt, like a kid stepping on a bug to see how its guts squish. Just because I could.  I couldn't tell you what color his eyes were, but there is still a crater in my heart from when he stared up into my face. On another question, I told my best friend that she wasn't my best friend anymore just to see if I could make tears fall. I could.  Many came in the form of pets. I lost points for not feeding my hamster, not changing the guinea pig's bedding. I lost a whopper of points when I left my parakeet lying on my bedroom floor for an hour, dressed to the neck in a skater Barbie romper. I was five, but still. But I'm a good student. I learn. I hurt--when the boy didn't talk to me again. When my friends ousted me from their group. When my stepfather taped an animal abuser sign to my door.  But you are not supposed to fail the test. Some questions were just thrown out. No points for or against me. Not bullying the tiny kid in Spanish class, the girl with the boyish voice that everyone else mocked--just staying quiet.  It was not how I told the story afterward.  No acts of heroism actually occurred.  When did I speak up for them? When did I take a risk myself?  I remember one.  Dancing with the geeky kid at the middle school dance, and ignoring the ridicule of my peers.  That got me a point.  But what else? How many times did  "leave that kid alone!" exit my mouth? Not enough to remember. It doesn’t count if you clam up and go blank.  It doesn't matter if you sweat and shake. You have to put it on paper. So I started creating extra credit assignments. Volunteering with kids. Making art with refugees. I even became a therapist--which also makes me money, so does it count? Or is that like paying off the teacher? Regardless, the extra credit never counts as much as the test questions. It's okay, though, because I am certain there will be more questions. I haven't passed this one yet. #poetry #newpoem
