I heard the author, Barak Benaryeh, read a few excerpts from this book today and was very entertained. It's a pet owners manual that's not boring! bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Is there a difference between being proud & being vain? I make the same distinction Mary does in Pride and Prejudice. Pride is an entirely internal thing, self-derived & self-satisfied. Vanity, on the other hand, concerns itself with what others think. #prideandprejudicequotes

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Over the next 4–5 weeks, my homeschool senior and I will be reading Pride and Prejudice. Today we're exploring how this opening line sets the tone of the novel.

In addition to the terrible anniversary for Jews all over the world, 10/7/26 marked 177 years since we lost Edgar Allan Poe. I read “The Tell-Tale Heart” yesterday. Today I’m watching the PBS American Masters documentary “Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive.” pbs.org/video/edgar-allan-po…

Apparently today is National Coffee Day. I had plenty, and I definitely had enough (too much) pizza at lunch with it! (Plus a brownie.) Now I’m having clients ask me word questions in the middle of a mid-afternoon sugar crash, and I’m pulling a Hamlet: “Words, words, words.”

I’m excited to go see @grammartable Ellen Jovin’s film for grammar nerds this week. I’ve been waiting a long time for a screening in Austin (which is odd, since Austin is in the movie)! austinfilm.org/screening/reb…

Good morning from #acesvcon26, everyone! Clients, I'll be a little slow to respond today. #Edibuddies, I might not interact as much as I normally do since I've got a client deadline.

Yay, Sweden!
Sweden is officially trading screens and tablets for physical books and handwriting to reverse a decline in reading skills. Once at the forefront of hyper-digitalized learning, Sweden is engineering a dramatic pivot back to the basics in its classrooms. Concerned that an overreliance on digital tablets and screens has eroded reading comprehension and foundational writing skills, Swedish education officials are investing heavily in traditional printed textbooks. The national strategy aims to phase out digital devices for children under the age of six entirely, following a drop in international reading assessment scores. Experts point out that while technology was championed to level the playing field, its unrestricted use has instead led to shorter attention spans and reduced retention among younger learners. Scientific evidence strongly supports this retro transition. Research indicates that the physical act of handwriting activates complex neural networks governing motor skills, vision, memory, and language—cognitive benefits that are largely lost on a keyboard. Furthermore, reading from a printed page provides critical spatial cues that aid comprehension, unlike digital screens that often subject students to cognitive fatigue and constant distractions. While computers and tablets remain valuable tools for research and collaboration, educators worldwide are watching Sweden's massive reinvestment in physical books as a potential blueprint for a more balanced, science-backed approach to modern schooling. source: The Guardian. Switching off: Sweden says back-to-basics schooling works on paper.

Jewish authors today face unprecedented challenges—rising antisemitism, event cancellations, shrinking publicity opportunities & shifting publishing priorities. On October 28, I’ll be attending the Jewish Authors’ Summit so I can better help my clients navigate this climate.

Really Interesting study findings: A child’s academic success is more closely linked to their levels of reading for pleasure than their socioeconomic background & reading has more of a positive impact on young people’s cognitive development than whether their parent has a degree.

Your daily reminder that children’s vocabulary before or at school entry strongly predicts later reading achievement—especially reading comprehension. Please tell every parent you know: poor screen habits create headwinds for their children’s academic futures. "Primary parent smartphone screen time was associated with slower growth in children’s receptive vocabulary."
How are phones and screens impacting children's language development? This study found: "Primary parent smartphone screen time was associated with slower growth in children’s receptive vocabulary, whereas children’s digital device ownership was associated with lower concurrent language performance." cc: @jean_twenge and @JonHaidt

No, Microsoft Word, I would NOT like to change “ten loitering people” to “ten-loitering people!” But thanks for asking. 🙄 #EditorLife #SpellCheckCantSaveYou #HumansNotMachines

The "rosy-fingered dawn" is one of the reasons I cherish Samuel Butler's translation of The Odyssey. It was also my grandmother's translation, and I inherited her copy. It will always be my favorite. merriam-webster.com/wordplay… 1/X

It means putting each piece in the historical and cultural context it arose from and understanding the symbolism and literary devices (including repetition) from that vantage point. 4/X

Also, if repetition signals unimportance, someone please inform everyone who emails, texts, calls, and then emails six more times. (Ditto political operatives who repeat the same thought-terminating cliches endlessly.) If it wasn't effective, they wouldn't do it. 5/🔚
