Steel tariffs motivated Cleveland Cliffs to spend $1 BILLION to hire more American workers and EXPAND production in Middletown Ohio. The layoffs are happening in Canada, not Ohio!
Here’s the question: is @JonahDispatch that stupid or that corrupt? Maybe both? What do you think?
Maybe the tariffs were stupid all along?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Cleveland-Cliffs is laying off workers at its Stelco steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, not in Middletown, Ohio. The company attributed the decision to U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel reducing its market. Its CEO has said he supports those tariffs.

There is nothing histrionic about hoping or fearing that a strongman arises in America. Classical writers observed almost 2000 years ago that all governments evolve from good to corrupted forms, begetting a cycle of constitutions.
Monarchies devolve into tyrannies, inviting an aristocracy to arise, which devolves into an oligarchy, so the people arise and impose democratic rule. The cycle restarts when democracy devolves into ineffective mob rule, inviting a strongman to arise—a fascist, some might say.
We are not as far from “ineffective mob rule” as some might think. Dismiss people’s concerns as a “response to Drag Queen Story Hour” at your own peril.
If your response to Drag Queen Story Hour is to completely abandon the Constitution and surrender to tyranny, you’re a histrionic child.
Grow a pair and take responsibility for what’s happening in your community rather than surrender everything great about America to a dictator to “solve” problems you’re unwilling to solve yourself.
This is the political equivalent of a girlfriend that throws all her boyfriend’s stuff out the window and destroys all their keepsakes and mementos because the relationship has taken a wrong turn.
.@VP: "There has been no company in the United States, unfortunately, that has abused this system more than Microsoft."
Microsoft laid off 6,000 American workers in 2025 after certifying that it could not find qualified American employees — yet the company was approved for more than 6,000 H-1Bs and filed 3,682 PERM applications, including nearly 1,000 applications for the same positions as the laid off American workers.
Lomez literally addresses this- more Americans are thinking about Israel in line with our foreign policy interests and less about Isreal in terms of an inherent moral right it has to our attention and resources
President Trump couldn't enforce the law because ... reasons
This weekend, I went to Springfield, Ohio, for Pierre Damas Bel's funeral--and to next-door Vandalia for Trump's same-day rally, where the president took a victory lap on the policies that killed him. I hope you'll give it a read.

The best way to invade the US is to attack her outposts, occasionally the homeland as well, and then sit back and wait for our bleeding heart factions to open the door
To the forgotten young men of Texas and America, you are forgotten no longer. The winds are changing in the Republican Party and I’m fighting to restore your birthright. Vote and get involved in your local party. I will fight like hell to restore the vision of America taken from you by Communists and their establishment R enablers.

I'm always astounded by how successful someone can be as a political commentator while understanding nothing of politics. I'm going to flesh this out into a full article about why this is so wrong because so few do understand what "The GOP" even is, but you do not understand that The Republican party pretty much across the board has factored in that White men under the age of 35 will not be voting for them in all their calculations and understanding of how to win elections.
You know why Brad was made? They thought that was the safest target for them to offend, because they already determined that young white men will not turn out in substantial numbers. And they're correct too. Last midterm, it was 23% of those aged 18-29 who were eligible to vote actually bothered voting. For those 65+, it was 68%.
So your big grand strategy to get the GOP on your side and to appeal to young men, is to threaten to do take actions that every single GOP strategist has already factored in and determined. It's hilarious, because you're constantly saying "if we just do the same thing we've always done, we are going to lose everything!"
In this case, the thing the group your purporting to represent has always done is not vote. So you're threatening to continue to do the thing you've always done to make a change. If you want the GOP to appeal to you, you need to do something of value and would need to demonstrate effectively that you are an actual voting block to appeal to. Because right now no one believes that.
No one has a process right in thier press access to the executive. There are plenty of competing media outlets that are currently locked out

This comment from Ben Shapiro is incredibly simplistic and historically ignorant-- not just because it doesn't acknowledge that what he happens to think of as a "meritocracy" (a certain cleverness with words, spreadsheets, or computer programming-- which is how most of the really big fortunes are made today) is historically contingent-- as @romanhelmetguy famously pointed out in the tweet below (which was not directed at Shapiro, to be clear)
But Shapiro's comment is also wrong because there are many, many downsides to pure meritocracy, and there are many important cultural and historical values that pure meritocratic thinking erases. This may be "good" for clever folks situated like Ben, but it's not good for society as a whole. Inevitably the logic of of pure meritocracy leads to open borders, globalism, extreme wealth inequality, and cultural homogenization (even if Ben might nominally claim to oppose, say, open borders)
Ben seems blissfully unaware that the term "meritocracy" itself was popularized in sociologist Michael Dunlop Young's 1958 *dystopian* novel The Rise of The Meritocracy, which warned against just such a purely "meritocratic" society as proposed by Ben and ultimately ended with the overthrow of the "meritocrats" by populists.
Don't get me wrong-- merit is good-- and societies that don't ultimately recognize and reward merit according to reasonably objective standards will tend to fall behind those who do.
But there are many social values other than "merit" that any society should consider in making policy, and to champion some sort of bloodless "meritocracy" as the primary goal we should aiming towards shows an unfortunate degree of ethical and intellectual tunnel vision.
This is funnier the more I think about it. Dan was chummy with Amanda Carpenter, who couldnt turn to the left fast enough after Redstate when the political games didnt work out for her. Dan himself was a white collar attorney from NY- hardly the stuff of hinterland insurgency

20 years is a long time in politics. You guys took your shot and Trump slid in anyways
She wasnt repenting here by willingly stepping away from her status and behavior. That was just emoting, as I suspected.
Replying to @abbythelibb_ @not_our_guy
Have you considered repenting by giving up your verified status and/or taking a large break so you dont profit from your behavior?

Mamdani announces that he's suing the Trump admin over the new rule that allows them to deny green cards to foreigners who are likely to rely on welfare.
Says that "four million people will unenroll from their healthcare" and that "people will die" if more green cards aren't given to welfare dependent foreigners.
You arent allowed to question why so many students at your flagship university are foreign nor can you question the sudden installation of foreign gods in your land
They cant stand it but its literally part of holding the 2015-2024 coalition together for the post Trump era. They find political trade offs distasteful
