Thanks for having us! Great discussion. The positive role of play in education is well documented and indisputable. It's now up to all of us to put it into practice, to document, to research and to advocate. And to play and have fun where everyone can see it and join! #WePlayChat

@baldbeauty22 @AtlParentLAB is inspired by and inspiring with sidewalk chalk 😊 Yes to replacing the chalkboard with the sidewalk! Reminds me of the walkabout style of @mrdearybury and @JuliePJones #TeachSC #WePlayChat

A4 1/3 Students are taught with essentially the same mode for their whole student career. Brains adapt to environments so students’ sit-&-passively-listen-to-lecture-&-take-notes neural pathways are well developed. They’ve come to expect passive lecture. #WePlayChat

Sadly, the standards of who can play and who can be silly provide an extra tall barrier for many. It's good to recognize that.

Yes! Absolutely. Another thing is the misconceptions of play. Play can be silly and fun but also, play can be serious. Play is also doing things flexibly or creatively. To us, play is resisting to fit within the status quo of what we “should” do or be. #WePlayChat

A2 7/7 There’s less literature on play in HE so one must borrow from K-12 & the general play experts. The lack of literature communicates a social value. Society at large does not value play in adulthood. Some even think play is a waste of time in childhood. Come on! #WePlayChat

More #PlayWisdom from the #WePlayChat from @AtlParentLAB - reminders that what seems simple or childish can have deep, significant, and powerful #learning outcomes
I used physically interactive games in my college classroom to 1) build intimacy and community, 2) demonstrate the complexity of childhood learning strategies, and 3) identify gender & racial disparities in childhood #weplaychat

The sad truth is that HE has gotten to where it is without play, so for many it is inconceivable that play might be a part of our future!

A1 1/3 Playful pedagogy is a misunderstood and underutilized approach that allows for more flexibility, creativity, joy, and fun! However, traditional lecture-based teaching is the most common mode but actually doesn’t cultivate optimal brain and learning states. #WePlayChat
