On Saturday, 550,000 people marched across France against rising living costs. By nightfall around 1,200 were arrested, more than 150 police officers injured, the town hall of Limoges was set ablaze, the Marseille city hall was broken into, the Lyon tourist office was torched. President Macron, you said in Davos 2026 that we Europeans “prefer respect to bullies,” and “Rule of Law to brutality.” We Europeans like to call ourselves a community of law and order. We show it daily in our foreign policy. So where is it on our streets? For decades, we confused ‘tolerance’ with lack of boundaries, and ‘coexistence’ with sharing a postal code. The result is parallel societies all over European cities, in France, Belgium, Italy, and crimes wherever and whenever they clash. Integration is owed by those who come. Enforcement is owed by those who govern. We need consequences for those who destroy, real demands of those who want to belong, and the ability to detect and halt any attempt to exploit, amplify, and fund our conflicts.
