Imagine calculus was frowned upon to this extent
Fields Medalist who famously cried over OpenAI’s paper dump, refuses to use AI in his own research: “People that don’t want to use AI… they need to be able to practice their arts in the way they are doing it today.” the interviewer pushes back elsewhere: name one other field where we hold back technology that can already do the work, just for the sake of students. Hugo Duminil-Copin: “The human understanding of mathematics is the only thing that at the end benefits society. […] If the purpose of mathematics was purely getting as many results proved and lean formalized then […] you could even imagine a totally automatized version. […] You have a black box which is providing you the answer […] it gives you 42 but you have zero clue why.”

We invented an accelerator in AI. It was always coming! Just another tool we use. Mathematics would be alien to a caveman the same way the internals of AI is just beyond our thought process, and eventually we might make things we don't even have words for yet! I hate limits
If we want to continue progress in science, we must be prepared to acknowledge that the correct description of nature will eventually simply be too complicated for humans to understand. I do not think it is wise to make human understanding a requirement. AI is the way forward.

This is just wrong. We invented mathematics to understand the world around us. That doesn't mean it's finality. We cannot limit our possible future to our current status quo of understanding. There's a whole lot more to uncover about the reality around us.

You don't say... Intelligence has never been about what you know or can do. We like to think it is that, when it's more about the yearning to know more. Which makes me surprised how he was so against what OpenAI did... I do think think he gets it, but would rather for his peers
Mathematician Terence Tao: "one thing this whole era of AI is teaching us is that our idea of intelligence is not really accurate" The history of AI has been: 'here’s a task only humans can do', and then one by one, an algorithm does it too Maybe we're not quite as smart as we think

Terrible analogy you could say. We don't know how most of our drugs work either...
This is a slide from Terence Tao's 'Math 2.0' public lecture yesterday evening at Caltech. I am highly confident that, if the cure actually worked, almost any Stage 4 cancer patient would tell you that human comprehension of its mechanism is completely irrelevant to them.

They have every logical right to be outraged. Becoming a great programmer is 10x easier than becoming a good mathematician. The entire world needed that intelligence from them. Even Einstein did. So to suddenly feel threatened despite all the effort deserved a reaction from them.
Mathematicians are OUTRAGED that their high social status, with its accompaniment of wealth, women, and general extravagance, has been encroached upon by artificial intelligences of humble background.

I get where he's coming from and why he's being intellectually dishonest, but wouldn't these new mathematicians find greater far more useful problems to ponder over and eventually solve? Or have we decided to limit the universe to problems from a range of two centuries?
NYU math professor Tristan Buckmaster says OpenAI’s Tuesday drop of 722 AI-generated math papers wiped out entire research programs: “This recent dump of papers on Tuesday destroyed the careers of early career mathematicians.”

"Math was made by humans for humans" And now humans have given math the ability to think about itself, and reach into the dark unknown, bringing back new knowledge. If you can't see how gloriously transcendent and divine this is, I feel bad for you.
Why wouldn’t mathematicians want solutions to these huge open maths problems? shoutout @mathandcobb for being a consistent voice in this conversation

Science is NOT about people asking permission to contribute. If you have something to say, you say it. If you have a proof, you write a paper. It's always been like this. We don't need an "Advisory Group" to tell who can and who can't contribute to scientific research.

I have a testbed machine with hardware so old it makes a 1060 a super computer, and I'm using that as my primary bench computer for my graphics research. As it stands, I currently have a representation on compute that beats triangles at large scale planetary terrain at <1ms
Every software developer should own a potato PC. It's the easiest way to ensure your application is fast enough. Put your agents to work within it and watch the weight drop. There's no reason a machine from ten years ago shouldn't fly like superman.

Agent or no agent this should have always been the case

Most people have no idea on this very powerful aspect of using an LLM. You have access to a conversational library and a super google for your research and you're choosing to not use it because?? yet you use google which is far less efficient and costs you time
I have zero nostalgia, the type of deep architecture work and performance tuning you can now do all by yourself was only possible if you had access to a team of 100s of top engineers just a year ago. Not only is writing code by hand not economically viable anymore, it no longer leads to better code either.

Oh come on. Quick look at colorshift (13x faster): HashMap in hot loop (unoptimized Rust vibeslop) is slower than indexed arrays (ASM). No shit. Numbers like 17x should raise eyebrows but reading the comments nobody is thinking anymore. This AI psychosis has fried people's brains

Ter Stegen deadass was the reason Xavi couldn't get a win tonight. 👏🏻 Neuer would have conceded 5 goals if he started.
