Conceding to labeling the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization isn't a flex of an answer to a racist, imperialist, and Islamophobic question.
Abdul has used the same framework when discussing Palestine through labeling Hamas as terrorists too.

As a Muslim journalist who spent her early career writing, observing and talking about Muslim Americans, pursuit of power & specifically Palestine (I created the concept/term of Faithwashing) - this perspective below is rooted in two myths: first, that the struggle for Palestinian liberation will come from American electoralism and second, that Muslim Americans of particular class backgrounds and on trajectories of pursuit of power have a primary vested interest in and plan for Palestinian liberation (or starting with at least ending the genocide).
This is historically not the case and we know, also historically, that the pacification of radical movements and moments happens the moment they are brought into the mainstream fold and choose to moderate themselves because no one is holding their feet to the fire. If all you’re satisfied with are crumbs, because the plate was empty before, then all you’ll get is crumbs.
Additionally, it’s been said so many times already, if you’re not pushing them left, they’re being pushed to the right.
A little outside my usual lane, but this needs to be said.

Since Abdul’s interview with Ezra Klein, I’ve watched parts of our movement go after him. On Wednesday, protesters chanted “traitor” at Zohran. I know I’ll be attacked for saying this, but I can’t stay quiet anymore while we turn on two of the most powerful advocates for Palestine in US politics.
I think we’re missing the bigger picture.
Zohran and Abdul are not only reaching millions of Americans outside our bubble, they're changing the way those Americans see Arabs and Muslims.
For decades, Hollywood portrayed us as terrorists and religious extremists, a threat to the West. In Reel Bad Arabs, Jack Shaheen documented how Hollywood systematically depicted Arabs as villains across more than 900 films, and that was even before 9/11. I have no doubt that this dehumanization contributed enormously to the lack of empathy Palestinians received for decades.
Now look at Abdul and Zohran. They're putting Arabs and Muslims in the middle of American political life as competent, principled American politicians, talking about healthcare, housing and the things that affect Americans' daily lives, without abandoning Palestine. A perfect example of that is Abdul's interviews on Fox. If you haven't seen them, I urge you to watch them before passing any further judgment. He was so compelling and so eloquent that even Jesse Watters, the Fox host, said afterward: “I like him. I don’t want to like him. I like him for some stupid reason.”
And it's not just that. Zohran warned that Gaza was on the brink of genocide on October 13, 2023, and Abdul was calling it a genocide by October 21. Long before they became prominent political figures, they took enormous risks by challenging the boundaries of acceptable political discourse.
And look how much those boundaries have shifted since. Without a doubt, Zohran taking that stance and winning in New York home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel was one of the biggest drivers of the broader shift we’re seeing within the Democratic Party.
Kamala Harris, who many hate for denying and enabling the genocide in Gaza is now endorsing Abdul, who calls Gaza a genocide and wants to stop arms sales to Israel. If that isn't a win for the movement, what is? And yet instead of celebrating it, we're angry at Abdul for receiving her endorsement.
Abdul did all this while also acknowledging the Jewish trauma from the Holocaust in his interview with Ezra Klein. Isn't that exactly what we've always wished politicians would do: represent all their constituents, including Jewish people, while refusing to compromise their moral principles?
And that trauma is real for Jewish people. What we Palestinians hate is how Israel has used that trauma to justify our oppression and dispossession.
Just to clarify: I don’t agree with everything they both say either. In the Ezra Klein interview, I wish Abdul had talked more about Palestinian trauma and what happened in 1948 as people don't understand it in the same way we all understand the trauma of the Holocaust.
But why does the responsibility of explaining that fall solely on him? Yes, he could have done better, but so could we as a movement.

It was never 'strategic' to support Palestine as you'd be smeared by the Israel lobby.
When the genocide escalated, suddenly it was 'strategic' to support Palestine - left channels and political parties sky rocketed.
Now they say it isn't strategic to call out the root cause?

Did Zionists have the right to ethnically cleanse more than half of the Palestinian population, destroy over 500 towns and villages and massacre thousands of Palestinians, to create the state of Israel?

Your definition of Zionism does not matter. Nor does mine. Zionism is defined by its material manifestations. The purpose of a system is what it does. And the Zionist system does racism and genocide. Simple. Please spare me the arrogant insufferable graaating Oxbridge debates. Your opinions are irrelevant. People are dying.

What’s happening is that boundaries are being created for what is acceptable critique of Israel that at face value seems to embrace majority opinion but actually is trying to quell it and the ensuing pressure to punish Israel. It also demands that Israeli propaganda - and the legitimacy of Israel and its claims - be accepted.
This is just an attempt at a pressure valve release and it will not work because it’s so transparent.

People have pointed to the fuller context of this clip as though it morally mitigates the literal both sides'ing of a genocide and rendering of Israelis as just products of trauma. This is very much a negation of reality and, at best, a liberal zionist talking point that coddles the genocidaires and makes Israelis/Jewish people perpetual victims.
The Israelis are not slaughtering Palestinians because they're traumatized from the Holocaust - we have many populations who've experienced genocide (which include concentration camps, rape of women, significant loss of total population, loss of language, etc) who are not incinerating entire families.
The Israelis are slaughtering Palestinians (and the Lebanese) because they are an expansionist ethno-supremacist state that runs on a system of apartheid and an ideology that sees Arabs, in particular, as inconvenient subhumans necessitating eradication. @AbdulElSayed
Abdul El-Sayed on Israel-Palestine:
I understand on both sides of this debate, we're also dealing with a lot of trauma. A lot of trauma.
I understand that for a lot of Jewish Americans, there's the trauma of the Holocaust and the need to have a refuge. I understand that.
And I also understand that for a lot of Palestinian Americans and Palestinians everywhere, there's the trauma of the Nakba.
We've got to be able to create the circumstances within which both of these deeply traumatized people can have a conversation built on principle. But to me, the answer has to be principle. It has to be.

Tonight on @C4Dispatches at 11.05pm “Britain’s Gaza secrets exposed”, our latest and 4th film on Gaza since October 7th.
Firstly, as ever we must pay tribute to our colleagues in Gaza who risk their lives every day there. Journalists have been targeted and killed in greater proportional numbers than in any other war in history. In Gaza journalism, like healthcare, the subject of our last film, has become a lethal profession.
We have spent the last year sifting through hundreds of internal FCDO IHL – (international humanitarian law) – assessments of Israel’s military conduct in Gaza. As those who have not looked away will know, 73,000 people, including at least 21,000 children have been killed in what a special @UN commission and the majority of international experts call a Genocide, which was meant to stop with the ceasefire last year, but which has effectively continued, albeit at a slower, but still regular child killing, pace.
So if it is a genocide- what did we, the UK do ? Did we stop it, as is our legal duty if there is a clear risk ? Did we intervene ? Or did we help enable it ?
This film looks at what role our own UK government played, through both Conservate and Labour parties, and the process by which the FCDO assesses whether Israel’s military conduct complied with international law.
Watch at 11.05pm on channel 4 to find out. I don’t want to give anything away but the process led to less than a handful of incidents, out of the many hundreds it examined, most with graphic video evidence, being described as possible war crimes. We try to explain how that happened. Why ? is a question for others- and perhaps international courts. Please watch.
After ICE went after our brothers @tjAmandla and @MomodouTaal for their pro-Palestine campaigning - it’s really important we help them to complete their PhDs. Please give generously to their campaign: chuffed.org/project/200834-s…

Every time Palestinians express their dissatisfaction at ceremonial wins that produce no tangible change, there is always a group of well-meaning "allies" who get extremely angry that we are not content with the crumbs this world has to offer us. It happens whenever an op-ed about Palestine written by a POC comes out in the NYTimes, or when an Arab author wins a prize from PEN, or when a liberal Israeli comes to a college campus to tell us about our own oppression. It happens when books (written by people who have benefitted from our subjugation) hit # 1, and, indeed, when an "Israeli-Palestinian" documentary wins an Oscar.
I'm not interested in debating the merit of the film, how well it was shot, its critical acclaim: many of you are missing the point. We do not need, and many of us do not want, our oppressors to validate our stories. In the same way we do not need a liberal Zionist like Yuval to get on stage and speak over us, we do not need a Haaretz or NYTimes journalist to break an "investigation" about the lived experiences of Palestinians that they have been yelling about for decades. This is a form of theater, a spectacle, and a lot of us are growing tired of it.
And yet, if we verbalize this, we are told that we are being "unreasonable," "unfair," "inflammatory," "unforgiving," "too harsh." We are asked "Did you even read/watch/visit __?!" (an insulting question to begin with; we do not need to view these things to understand the premise of it is problematic) and if we say yes, the follow-up is almost always a variation of "This is just pushing people away from the Pro-Palestine cause" and, of course, "Who do you think this is helping?"
But what some of you fail to understand is this is not about how other people feel, this is about our dignity and our refusal to keep accepting the bare minimum. Many of you have become way too comfortable telling Palestinians how we should feel about our own oppressors. What makes people comfortable enough to send us these patronizing messages. Do you not hear yourselves? Do you not read back your replies and think: perhaps this is a time for me to sit, observe, and listen, instead of speaking over the very people I claim to support? Liberal Zionism has become so pervasive in arts and culture, and it becomes clearer every day that the solidarity our allies show is, for the most part, conditional.
We are tired. We do not want awards or shoutouts from the same establishments that manufacture consent to kill us. We just want liberation. Please stop telling us to be content with what we've got and to just "let people be happy." We are not spectacles for your enjoyment. We've tried to appeal to the elite for decades and it hasn't gotten us very far. As always, this will make me the "never satisfied," "always angry" Palestinian. So be it.
