Today four of my white colleagues/friends called to express their outrage, see how I’m feeling, and talk about what they can do to help. When members of the Black community consistently face a lack of basic dignity and humanity, this matters. Silence and inaction amplify pain.

This is just a start. What other things can we do in our corner of the world (academic science) to address racism, individual and institutional?

6. Speaking of, as a diversity program director, it’s often really hard to find faculty to be involved in our programming. We tend to bug the same handful of faculty who always participate (BLESS THEM). We know you're busy, but hey, you wanted to know what YOU can do, right?

5. Get involved with diversity initiatives on your campus! In science there are tons. We are ALWAYS looking for faculty to be involved through providing research opportunities but also leading journal clubs, giving feedback on talks, or just coming to our events to hang out!

4. Learn to move from “bystander to upstander”. I’ve heard so many blatantly racist comments from “educated liberal people” in academia. @NIH_OITE just did a great training on this, here's a video from the end of a recent training on this topic. youtu.be/JegGjYtstyw

3. Don’t know what “microaggressions” or “stereotype threat” are? Use google and learn! Even better, learn about common phrases commonly said within YOUR professional context that do more damage than you think. "He's so articulate..." Stop saying these things and then...

2. Eliminate admissions practices, such as standardized testing, that do little to assess potential for success in your program but do much to bias against people from marginalized groups.

1. Be a vocal advocate for hiring black scientists as faculty in your department. I bet there were some really great black grad students that went through your dept. RECRUIT THEM! (Students really care about faculty diversity btw and notice its absence.)

While we (not marginalized people) have racism in the front of our brains, let's think about practical things we can do to confront racism and dismantle systemic barriers in our own settings (in my case, academic research). We all want to DO something, so let's make a list:

Our (co-inventors @McLellan_Lab) COVID-19 vaccine (spike delivered by @moderna_tx's mRNA) was just injected into the 1st human in phase 1 trial, only 66 days after viral sequence release... a testament to rapid vaccine development for emerging diseases🦠💚

Yesterday, @ASCBiology hosted the EE Just Lecture Series. I encourage all biomedical scientists to pay it forward and tell your African American trainees about this postgraduate opportunity. Attached is a flyer that provides the details. #ASCBMAC #ASCBEMBO19 #ASCBEMBO2019
