Love the article, Josh. I would emphasise that the debrief tool sets the whole culture in motion (so I always start there). For teams who don’t get to practice Tier 1 hours (Theory, Scrims, Debrief, Vod review 7 hours/day for 5 or 6 days per week), I can confirm that the games at the start of the day are great fun for the first 30 mins, especially if your team usually has a ‘quiet’ first scrim because players aren’t on the same page vocally and energetically. I want to further explore a topic you touched on…there’s a fine line between having fun and being silly, and have fun and staying focused. It takes a bit of practice, and sometimes the players themselves can’t see when they are verging on silliness and just a small correction from the coach is needed. It’s worth exploring the boundary though, so give it a go. And this is my personal opinion - I DO NOT advocate giving out ‘punishments’ (eg fines or push ups etc). This is the fastest way to kill a fun environment imo. The better way is to reward players doing the right thing (making sure you are always rewarding EFFORT, not necessarily OUTCOME, because only effort is in the players’ control). And one last thing that I do with teams that I believe is core to funmaxxing is ‘acknowledging good efforts (by name preferably) in the round’. This is an underrated technique for building teams who love to play for each other. Who doesn’t love being celebrated by their teammates when something they’ve done (good kills, good reads, good utility etc) comes off? The behaviours that get recognised get repeated.
