I’m beating a dead horse at this point but the other dumb thing is it isn’t about cost savings from eliminating stairs. The starting assumption shows a complete lack of understanding. The purpose of single stair is the ability to design small infill buildings, with more family sized units. Buildings of 12-24 homes, on small lots, as opposed to huge buildings of 120-240 shoe-box shaped “units” with a single wall for windows. The first is one stair. For 24 homes. The second has two. For 240 units. Anyone see how foolish this belief that it’s about minor savings from dropping a stairwell is? By default it’s more stairs per unit. The diagram below does a good job showing the overall intent and use of a point access block - repeating, fully fire-separated small buildings. Notice how it’s much skinnier than the typical 5-over-1 people complain about? the cross ventilation, dual aspect of windows that lets these live more like a “home” vs what most Americans think of when you say apartment. Relatedly, it’s not large developers pushing for these reforms. It’s small local ones and individual advocates for more family-friendly housing and more affordable housing where it’s most lacking. Large developers are more than happy with the existing format, raising institutional capital to build hundreds of studios and 1 bedroom apartments.
Real relevance for Calgary. Is single egress worth the cost savings? One stair means one way out. When smoke fills that space, there is no backup for residents or firefighters. Calgary can build housing and still build safely. The question is what level of risk we accept.

This building had two staircases. The post is misleading by talking about having only a single way out. x.com/maxdubler/stat…

The presidential pardon system has reached a breaking point, which is why I have joined Reps. Cohen, Lieu, and H. Johnson in proposing a Constitutional amendment that finally puts guardrails on abuse. The amendment would explicitly prohibit a self-pardon and would bar pardons for family members, administration officials, and campaign employees. It would also forbid pardons for anyone whose crimes were committed to advance the direct and significant personal interests of a President or those close to a President, or whose crimes were carried out at the direction of a President. It further clarifies that no pardon issued for a corrupt purpose is valid, whether past, present, or future. The need for reform is clear. A tool meant to correct injustices has instead enabled them. It is time to protect the Constitution and the rule of law with common sense limits that restore public trust.

US traffic engineering absolutely sucks ass at safe systems and is about five decades behind peer nations. If professionals in any other discipline showed the same disregard for human life that is standard in TE, they would be fired, fined into penury and face criminal charges.
After hitting a low in 2009, U.S. deaths of people walking have climbed roughly 80%, erasing over 30 years of progress. People focus on the right half but decades of work by traffic engineers focusing on safety brought the downturn until 2009 and continues with the goal of vision zero as the North Star.

At Zurich’s airport, a train leaves every 4 minutes and a tram or bus leaves every 2 minutes. There are 136 metro areas in the USA that more populated than Zurich’s. We have to do better.

This extra language would harm our business in Ohio, too (that uses hemp from KY). I expect @SenJonHusted and @berniemoreno to support Senator Paul!
Just to be clear: I am not delaying this bill. The timing is already fixed under Senate procedure. But there is extraneous language in this package that has nothing to do with reopening the government and would harm Kentucky’s hemp farmers and small businesses. Standing up for Kentucky jobs is part of my job.

Welp, they didn't accept Paul's amendment, so the hemp industry is likely on hold indefinitely.

In short, every state program that has codified Hemp products will shutter. Hemp farmers will go out of business. 330,000 Americans will lose their jobs. There is no "state legal" hemp.
So if this passes what’s the practical effect? @cantripguy - does this mean larger retailers pull back? Smaller retailers stay in the game and gain share under state legal regs like MN?

Cincinnati, we could also officially legalize 6-Story Single Stair apartment buildings city-wide! Baltimore just did. It just takes political will.
Today, I signed a package of bills to make housing in Baltimore more abundant and affordable. These bills will help folks buy a home and grow wealth, counter decades of disinvestment, and make sure both long-time and new residents feel the benefits of Baltimore's Renaissance.

The left photo is a new American ladder truck. The right is a model common in Germany. -Guess which country has better fire safety statistics. -Now guess which has fewer pedestrian deaths. Bonus questions: -which carries more water? -which carries more crew?
On ladder trucks: A Pierce (US) 100’ ladder is ~46’9” in length. A Rosenbauer (EU) 105’ turntable ladder is 33’9”. -13’ (28%) shorter -5’ MORE reach -articulates AROUND obstacles vs straight ladder -Cheaper -More nimble -Faster setup -Superior extraction for disabled or injured
