NEW on @zeteo_news— Venues are *pulling out* of hosting Vivek Ramaswamy for his final bus tour across Ohio. “We’re getting calls that people don’t want him there,” a top Ohio Republican says. “It’s that damn ad.” From @andrewperezdc & Swin Suebsaeng:zeteo.com/p/venues-start-can…

@nytimes profiles Neha Bora, one of the clearest young voices insisting that dissent, protest and public participation still belong in India. Dharma asks something of us in public life: courage, truth-telling, and responsibility when power closes ranks. buff.ly/AMTHdSx

This past weekend, thousands of anti-government protesters were arrested in New Delhi. A movement that began several months ago, and was initially focussed on demands to reform India’s education system, has now centered itself around the government’s decision to remove more than 100 million people from the country’s voter rolls. “By sheer numbers, this is one of the largest-ever exercises of disenfranchisement in the history of the world,” Yogendra Yadav, an activist and political scientist says. Read Isaac Chotiner’s full conversation with Yadav about the widespread unrest in Narendra Modi’s India and the aggressive action taken by a panic-stricken regime that knows it is losing popularity: newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/i…

Khalifa Siwa died holding his insulin pen. Babacar Dem was on kidney dialysis three times a week and drove longer hours to make up for income he lost while receiving his treatment so that he could keep up with his lease payments. Richard Coulibaly had been in and out of the hospital due to heart issues. Jagjit Singh picked up his 10-year-old twin sons from school every day but couldn't afford to take time off for his health. The four yellow taxi drivers who died on the job over the summer all had health issues they weren't able to take care of because they couldn't afford to take time off. Most Americans can't afford to take unpaid sick days. But the situation is even more dire for NYC's professional drivers who pay every day just to go to work with fixed expenses like vehicle insurance, car lease payments, and medallion loan payments. Any day they take off puts them further into debt. That's why we're organizing to win life-saving health and wellness benefits for NYC yellow taxi, Uber, Lyft, and livery drivers including: ➡️ short-term disability ➡️ supplemental Workers Comp and disability ➡️ paid sick and family leave ➡️ term life and accidental death and dismemberment insurances ➡️supplemental care such as vision, dental, ➡️ and the first-ever retirement plan for NYC drivers Uber and Marblegate's endorsement of NYTWA's health and wellness agenda means that over 100,000 NYC drivers are that much closer to securing these critical on-the-job safety nets. Unlike in 2013-2014 when taxi garages organized to oppose NYTWA's fund for yellow cab drivers, this time there is active support from the two largest corporations for NYTWA's proposal.

New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to abolish NYC's horse carriage industry — a critical breakthrough in a decadeslong, politically fraught effort to ban the tourist attraction. politico.com/news/2026/10/13…

For decades, we have asked the same question after sexual violence: Why didn't she report it?
Why didn't she call the police immediately? Why did she wait three weeks? Why…why…why. swopbehindbars.org/post/the-…

Folks might not realize how big of a commitment this is, given how / why this loophole has continued to exist. It’s a big deal.
Choosing to have a drink is not consent, and it’s never a license for sexual assault. New York law should reflect that. I support closing the voluntary intoxication loophole and will work with the Legislature to get it done.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There is no law in New York saying choosing to drink means consenting to sex. Current New York law says voluntary intoxication does not invalidate an individual's ability to give consent, as it does not meet the state's standard of "mentally incapacitated". nysenate.gov/legislation/la… nysenate.gov/legislation/la…

Submitting your horror film about rape and lack of bodily autonomy as a comedy is egregious. Especially when one of the biggest news stories right now is about how rape survivors never get justice. Reducing it to a comedy to have a better chance of winning is absolutely vile
‘OBSESSION’ has been submitted for the Musical or Comedy categories at the Golden Globes. (hollywoodreporter.com/movies…)

A New York deli owner’s program has raised over $587,000 to reward kids for good grades. Wail Alselwi, co-owner of Zack’s Finest Deli & Grocery in Staten Island, started ‘Grades for Grabs’ in 2023. Kids with an average of 90 or higher can get $100 and items from the store. He also rewards kids who improve their grades. Donations to a GoFundMe help fund the rewards. [🎥: @islandock1 ]

The male @Cornell student body President identifying the presence of ketamine as the primary issue vs patriarchy and systems designed to shield it live on @CNN lays bare the entire reason that this happened. Young men and boys clearly have no clue that THEY bear responsibility. Bhai to bondhu: take steps.

PLEASE READ: One of the 7 Cornell rapists Scott Kretzschmar’s mother, Samantha Kretzschmar, is the Director of Public Safety (painfully ironic) in Fraser Michigan. Her department is hosting a public safety open house on October 20th! It would be nice if the Fraser community came together to demand her son face the consequences for what he and his friends did! This open house is supposed to make their community safer, meanwhile the director of their public safety is the mother of a rapist who is free and being protected.

264,000 errors. @NYCMayor has delivered the largest worker settlement in NYC history.
Since 2023, more than 200,000 Dashers in New York City were underpaid or paid late under the City’s delivery worker pay rules. These errors were unintentional, but that doesn’t make them acceptable. Dashers should be paid in full, on time, every time. We take full responsibility, and we’re deeply sorry. We’ve reached a $131.5 million settlement with the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. Every impacted Dasher will receive the amount they are owed, and they’ll be contacted directly with payment details. We understand the impact of even one missed or late payment. We’ve addressed the issues that caused these errors and made changes to prevent them from happening again. Read more here: about.doordash.com/en-us/new….

theguardian.com/us-news/2026/s… The City of New York asserts this was not a mistake. “For years, DoorDash failed to count every hour worked by delivery workers,” Mayor Mamdani said. “This was not a rounding error or an accidental mistake.“
