“And finally I would like, if I may, to dedicate this Oscar to the heroism and the courage of women, and to hope that it inspires the creation of more true screen heroines to represent them.” In 1996, Emma Thompson became the only person in history to win Oscars for both acting and writing. At the 65th Oscars, she won Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Schlegel in HOWARDS END. Three years later, she won Adapted Screenplay for SENSE AND SENSIBILITY.

The film deserves a new release. Quite exciting
John Boorman's DELIVERANCE • Coming to Criterion in January! criterion.com/films/34864-de… The ultimate odyssey into the untamed wilderness of the supposedly civilized heart, Boorman’s shock to the pop-culture consciousness follows four friends from Atlanta—played by Burt Reynolds (in his breakthrough role), Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox—on a weekend canoeing trip in rural Georgia.

“Congo” is a blast

Had a great time at the #Narnia trailer event earlier today, featuring a wonderful conversation between Greta Gerwig and Stephen Colbert. Gerwig always speaks so beautifully and passionately about cinema. She talked about how the Narnia books helped shape who she is, and how C.S. Lewis’s autobiography “Surprised by Joy” became a major inspiration for her approach to the material. Love that she shot on film, and especially loved the way Gerwig connected the communal experience of practicing faith with the ritual of going to the movies. Both are about gathering together, sharing something meaningful and feeling connected to something larger than ourselves. One of my favorite stories was how Gerwig landed “Stairway to Heaven,” a notoriously difficult song to license for a film. She met directly with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and it was their shared appreciation for C.S. Lewis’s work that ultimately helped her secure the song, which plays such a defining role in the first trailer. (I’m also a sucker for a good hat, and this is a good hat!)

Madonna did her most physically demanding tours in her 40s & 50s, when most dancers had already retired. Did them all in high heels, raising the bar even higher. She redefined what physical strength, stamina, and artistry look like in pop music. She’s STILL doing it in her 60s.

Tim Burton's Edward movies are both just masterpieces- and this interaction is the core of the film in many ways... the screenplay by @Karaszewski and Scott Alexander is perfect.
Vincent D’Onofrio was pissed when he found out his Orson Welles cameo in Ed Wood had been dubbed over by Maurice LaMarche (the voice of The Brain from Animaniacs). He didn’t stay mad; he channelled it into Five Minutes, Mr Welles, winning acclaim for his performance as Orson.
