We live in a suburban town in Ireland. Five years ago we decided to put a pond in our garden. I always wanted a pond when I was little so it was a big deal to me. For a while not much was happening with the pond I mean it looked like this👇 A thread (1)

A good example of the tokenism that so often passes for 'action' on biodiversity collapse: a 'bug hotel', plonked in a garden of a) Sterile lawns b) Alien plants It's shocking, I know, but what wildlife *really* needs is actual wild, natural HABITAT.

I think people really don't appreciate just how incomplete Linux kernel API docs are, and how Rust solves the problem. I wrote a pile of Rust abstractions for various subsystems. For practically every single one, I had to read the C source code to understand how to use its API.

I like having a project on holiday, so this month I took on the restoration of a Victorian reservoir on the Scottish island I was staying on, hoping to create both a new swimming spot & rare fresh water lochan on the island, but also possibly biting off more than I could chew…

This is a very exciting day for anyone who loves forming possessives and plurals of proper nouns ending in sibilants.

"Buy Conor Pass, make it a national park, and rewild it." This is the @UpliftIRL petition started by @saoirse_mchugh last August, signed by almost 20k people. The state *did* buy Conor Pass, *did* make it a national park, and has sheep grazing it. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️🤦🏼 my.uplift.ie/petitions/buy-c…

Destruction of a precious ancient bluebell woodland in the Kent countryside under a deluge of illegal landfill waste shows the utter failure of environmental law, complete inaction by the authorities & increasing lawlessness in the UK. Let me tell you the story of Hoads Wood 🧵

I just submitted my response to the Welsh Government's sustainable farming scheme. I think the ethos of payments for public good is correct, and I like the ambition for the scheme, which is desperately needed to reverse wildlife declines. The 8 points I made in my reply👇

Today, the paperback edition of 'An Irish Atlantic Rainforest' goes on sale. So far, about 20k copies of the hardback have sold: fantastic for an 'Irish nature book'! We're seeing a real revolution in attitudes towards the natural world in Ireland, and there's NO going back. 🌍

What happened to the concept of Multimedia software like Encarta? It would be so interesting if that whole thing had worked out. Imagine hobby and educational books like MIT Press Essential Knowledge series in a Multimedia format, with videos, sounds and interactive models to play with as you read & learn about something.

Do you have a favorite tree? Not a favorite KIND of tree, but a specific one? Mine is this White Silk Cotton Tree in Lalbagh, Bengaluru, about 200 years old. I've been visiting it nearly a quarter of its life. It's taken some tear lately, but is still strong.

A photo of one of our habitat restoration sites from last week. The brash is pinned in to stop erosion of the bank but will also provide homes for invertebrates and cover for fish. Willow is included, this will sprout into new trees to make the structure alive and permenant.

Cool new research on forests in the last interglacial: really the last time European landscapes approached natural. It found that megafauna like now extinct straight-tusked elephant kept many (over 50%) forests partially open. Makes perfect sense. We've lost SO much wonder🌍
How open were European forests before strong human impacts? 🌳 Check out our new paper in Science Advances! science.org/doi/full/10.1126… Thanks to the team @JCSvenning @MazierFlorence @SigneNormand and many others, and to @BStokkermans for the beautiful illustrations!

Grandpa died 20 years ago this past July, but it’s great being reminded that his memory continues to live on through his designs. Thanks for sharing.

MY EYES! What in the name of flying shit is this monstrosity!?! This was a flower filled, species rich, ancient Devon hedge. Probably medieval or older. The soil largely undisturbed in all that time, full of wildflower seeds, fungi and other goodies. Now matted, stoned & gross

Another milestone in Guatemala: we have now removed over one thousand truckloads of trash from the Rio Las Vacas. 🇬🇹 This is our toughest river challenge so far, but we’re continually working to improve Interceptor 006 and keep tons of plastic from entering the Caribbean Sea.
