I agree that spiritual fatherhood and mentorship are recognised in Scripture, and I will never dispute that, I also made mention of Abraham and Sarah in my initial tweet. However, I think there’s a distinction between Paul referring to Onesimus as his son in the faith and believers adopting their pastor’s name as a personal identity. In Philemon 1:10, Paul was describing a spiritual relationship, not establishing a naming practice. My question, therefore, remains: do these scriptures establish a precedent for attaching Omo to a pastor’s name, or are we extending the biblical principle of spiritual fatherhood into a contemporary cultural expression? I also think 1 Corinthians 1:10–13 is worth considering. Paul rebuked the Corinthians for identifying themselves with different spiritual leaders, asking if Christ was divided. I understand that the context was division in the church, not taking on Pastors Names, so I’m not saying the passage directly condemns the practice. However, it does make me question whether attaching a spiritual father’s name to our identity has a scriptural precedent and whether we are keeping Christ at the centre of our identity Like I said earlier, I want to understand through the lens of scripture. Because none of these student ever referred to themselves as “Sons of Paul” etc.
