My dear friends, please, I hope to demand your absolute attention to this matter: In 2018, my junior from St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, Dr. Randall Sequeira (middle in the pic), trekked up a steep, bauxite-rich plateau in Odisha to hold a monsoon health camp in the indigenous Kutiya Kondh village of Kutrumali. In a piece he wrote then titled "Kutrumali’s Demons," Randall described sleeping under a dripping school roof in freezing fog, borrowing utensils from a local health worker to cook khichdi, and waking up at 6 AM to a line of tribal mothers. He wrote with heartbreak about treating malnourished toddlers with protruding bellies and visible ribs, listening to stories of stillbirths and chronic fevers, while noticing the shiny new solar lights installed by a mining conglomerate eyeing the aluminium ore beneath the villagers' feet. Comparing his small medical team to hobbits sheltering in the night, Randall worried about the outside forces coming for that fragile village. Randall stayed with the tribal/ adivasi community to serve them. After St. John’s and an MD in Internal Medicine from SMS Jaipur, he gave up every comfort of urban medicine to live in Kalahandi, recognizing that clinical prescriptions are meaningless when indigenous communities are stripped of their forests, water, and dignity. On the night of October 16, Odisha police picked up Dr. Randall Sequeira and Dalit activist Laxman Naik at 11 PM from his home in Bhawanipatna. A gentle physician who has spent years trekking up hills to save tribal children is now locked in Rayagada sub-jail under frivolous but draconian charges (attempt to murder, dacoity), simply for standing with Adivasis peaceful protesting the mining of their sacred hills in Sijimali and Kutrumali. thewire.in/rights/randall-se… Odisha Govt. said it will cut down forests to connect tribal villages. But it was a way to bypass green laws and fast track London based Vedanta’s, and Adani's mining plans. Local organisations estimate that around 45 villages depend on these hills and would be affected. reporters-collective.in/trc/… The state has answered with repression rather than dialogue. In the last three years, at least 43 police cases have been filed and over a hundred Adivasis and Dalits, both women and men, have been incarcerated in Odisha jails. For example, from In March and april 2026, 8, 2026, to April 8, 2026, within one month, 24 people were sent to jail, 217 were made accused, and the number of “others” total 1,140. An activist who was not named in the original FIRs, but has since been implicated in about 12 cases, so that bail in one case is followed by arrest in another. This pattern of capture and releases have been used to crush rational dissent. Dr. Randall understood that being a good doctor means understanding that prescriptions cannot compensate for the denial of land rights, that surgery cannot undo displacement and that no medical can substitute for the basic infrastructure a government has failed to provide. thehindu.com/sci-tech/health… To my fellow medical fraternity, and every citizen with a conscience: a kind physician who embodies the highest ethics of our profession is being criminalized to clear the way for bauxite mining. Please do not let his voice be buried in a sub-jail. Amplify this, demand due process, and demand the immediate release. Please sign in this form to show solidarity: forms.gle/o2Rj2Uu3tXaoWu9dA If anyone can help out in this situation please reach out to Medico Friend Circle - mfcindia.org/

At 10:30 pm last night, reports that @odisha_police detained Dr Randall Sequeira, doctor to Adivasi communities, and Laxman Naik, leader of affected villages opposing @Vedanta_Group’s mining in Niyamgiri and Sijimali. Their whereabouts are still unknown, no access to a lawyer.
NEW | Vedanta seems to be attempting to revive its stalled Niyamgiri bauxite mining project despite the Gram Sabhas’ rejection of mining in 2013, raising concerns that the Odisha government may be using the criminal justice system to weaken tribal resistance and clear the way for corporate interests. @Ayaskant_Das reports. frontline.thehindu.com/envir…

Civilian protests across India have been increasingly met with police intervention — and allegations of excessive force have taken center stage. Reuters examined the guidelines and recent protest data to explore where these possible excesses against demonstrators are happening and why reut.rs/47jBORq

My list of terrible questions being asked of those protesting in Delhi against CEC Gyanesh Kumar: Why are opposition parties, student groups and CJP coming together? Do you all agree on everything? Who is actually leading this protest? Why aren’t you all holding one big, united protest? To student leaders: Will you join Congress or AAP and contest elections? Are you all doing this just for Instagram? Why are you blocking Delhi and inconveniencing ordinary people? Why are you politicising everything? Why should students care about the Election Commission? Don’t you have jobs and careers to focus on? Aren’t you creating anarchy? Why can’t students simply focus on doing well in life instead of getting involved in elections?

This is an exhaustive list of accounts from journalists who were either detained, assaulted, or had their equipment damaged by the Delhi Police. There are around 30 accounts in total, with direct quotes from almost all of them. thenewsminute.com/news/over-…

Videos from Chennai: Protestors being detained in Besant Nagar. Illa puriyala! The state government in Tamil Nadu is in alliance with Congress (@INCIndia) and has declared BJP (@BJP4India) as it's ideological opponent. That means the CEC's alleged scam in SIR supported by the BJP govt must be contested by the TVK government, no? And this protest must be allowed to happen in peace just like at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Right? Why the thump chesting great warrior TVK government and its most efficient CM (@CMOTamilnadu) and actor Vijay (@actorvijay) is scared of going against BJP? Why? At least he could've endorsed the Indian Express article and condemned the alleged fraud in voters list. Especially with VCK (@vckitwingoffi ) in its alliance....MP Thol Thirumavalavan (@thirumaofficial) was literally protesting in Delhi yesterday but his friends in TN aren't allowing the same protest. •Is TVK govt really an alliance govt after all? •Or is TVK an actual proxy of the BJP in Tamil Nadu? •Did TVK benefit out of the SIR indirectly or directly which is why they're hesitant? •Is Vijay and his bunch of ministers not competent enough to even criticise the SIR drive? Tamil Nadu is going clownish day by day. #ChennaiProtests

So #Chennai, it's of no use your being part of a non-BJP state, is it? No one is safe here either. @TVKVijayHQ @actorvijay Are these your true colours? Do your red and yellow bleed to make saffron?

Practice what you preach. The law requires police personnel to visibly display their name tags at all times.

Love how FOMO has inspired Indians to join protests like never before. It used to take protests much longer to get to this stage, though we did see it during the anti-CAA-NRC protest too. This time, Insta videos of Gen Z protestors, depicting the JOY of rebellion is the trigger

A young female agitator today in New Delhi ran away with the ignition key of a bus in which detained protestors were being shipped off. Later the police sleuths had to push the bus to remove it from the protest site.

Poromboke: Tamil for shared-use, communally held, unenclosed spaces — the commons. Degraded to mean worthless people & places, the word was reclaimed through fisher struggles to defend Chennai’s wetlands. What can poromboke teach us about value, belonging & commons of care?

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, there’s a tree outside your bedroom window. It’s important to notice it, appreciate it, and romanticize it as much as possible.
