5/7 We also found that when a pair of baboons has especially consistent correlation patterns, they tend to have similar baseline microbiome community compositions and be genetic relatives (but not social group members!)
4/7 The correlations come from abundance trajectories modeled by @kimberlyeroche. She used multinomial logistic-normal models to learn a smoothly evolving Gaussian process to model abundance trajectories for each taxon in each baboon. This is the most negatively correlated pair.
3/7 You can see these highly consistent patterns in the heat map below. The columns show correlations for each distinct pair of microbes. The rows show the correlation patterns for each baboon.
1/7 Do different hosts have different microbiome ecologies 🦠🧬🐒? @kimberlyeroche tackled this question in the @AmboseliBaboons, and we're ready to share the preprint! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Check out the temporal autocorrelation in baboon microbiota for samples collected on the same day to up to 12 years apart! Samples within a few days are most similar, but baboons return to similar microbiome states on annual, 12-month cycles ⌚️🐒
Do baboons in the same environment have synchronized microbiomes? They sure don't!! 😯 Synchronizing forces can't overwhelm personalization in baboon gut microbiota. Check out our latest paper in @NatureEcoEvo
