India’s para-archer Sheetal Devi has equalled the world record and established a new Asian record in the women’s compound qualification round, scoring 704 out of a possible 720 points.
She surpassed the previous Asian record of 698 points by 6 points, delivering an outstanding performance on the opening day of the competition.
Sheetal continued to lead the standings, while India’s Payal Nag was placed 5th with 619 points, as the qualification round remained underway.

Northeast monsoon begins, but nearly 79% of Tamil Nadu’s irrigation tanks remain dry or have very little water.
Of the 14,141 irrigation tanks monitored by the Water Resources Department, 4,734 have zero storage, while another 6,385 hold water at just 1–25% of their capacity. Together, 11,119 tanks fall into these two categories.
The situation varies sharply across districts. Madurai has 1,148 of its 1,340 tanks with nil storage, while Thanjavur has 535 of 641 tanks in the same category. In contrast, Kanniyakumari has 411 full tanks.
Hope, northeast monsoon turn things around with widespread rains. But, climate change and El Niño might reduce the number of rainy days and deliver extreme spells in short duration. Experts say the State needs to prepare itself for this new normal and capture the surface run-off water.
