Better roads should be a priority. That is why I was proud to launch the APPG for Better Roads’ new report in Parliament. When I became a Surrey County Councillor in 2021, the state of our roads quickly became one of the biggest issues in my inbox. I promised to keep fighting for better funding when I became an MP. As Chair of the @AppgRoads, I am determined to deliver on that promise. Our report sets out how Councils could make better use of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding, money raised from development, to improve our roads. Thank you to the @AIA_Asphalt, the Institute of Highway Engineers and everyone involved in preparing the report.

Today, our Senior Public Affairs Lead, @RHA_Ferdy, attended the APPG for Better Roads parliamentary reception, chaired by @Rebecca_SPaul MP, to support the launch of its new report, Working for Better Roads. The report explores how Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding can provide vital extra revenue for local highway improvements. With deteriorating road surfaces and potholes causing rising vehicle damage, higher maintenance costs, and journey delays for HGV and coach operators, the campaign advocates for greater flexibility so local councils can invest in long-term road resurfacing over temporary fixes. Rebecca Paul MP has long been a champion for road users, and we were delighted to catch up with her to discuss better road funding and look ahead to #NationalCoachWeek. We look forward to continuing our work together to champion the infrastructure our transport operators rely on every day. #RHACampaigns

Potholes are a sign that a road hasn’t been resurfaced at the right time. But resurfacing is expensive. There is est. billions of unspent CIL across the country. This must be spent on resurfacing our roads and improving drainage, not earning interest for local councils.

The AIA was back in Westminster today to host the All Party Parliamentary Group for Better Roads, along with the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). The drop-in session welcomed Parliamentarians and experts from the highway and street works sector to discuss how utility reinstatements could be improved to minimise disruption to road-users and limit structural impact on the highway network. #BuildingResilientRoads @AppgRoads

We’d like to thank @RebeccaPaulMP, Chair of the APPG for Better Roads, for her message to local authority highway engineers during our Sharing Best Practice webinar. In her new role, Rebecca’s priority is to ensure that our highway network receives the long-term, sustainable funding it needs, moving away from short-term pothole repairs. We are delighted to support the work of the APPG for Better Roads, with the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) to help promote an understanding of the importance of the highway network with parliamentarians and policymakers. Why should drivers #PayPerMile for failing roads in UK? In 15 years time 51% of our roads will be structurally unsound. Successive governments have ignored the multi-billion roads maintenance backlog. Which is still increasing by millions each week.
