A NEW PRINT MAG?! IN THE YEAR OF 2026?!?!
It’s been crazy and fun to help build this magazine from scratch. Best part of my job!! So excited for it to land on peoples doorsteps :)
The Washington Sun is creating The Washington Sun Magazine, a monthly print publication featuring some of the most compelling journalism produced by The Sun’s newsroom, with an emphasis on longform storytelling, essays and local news. The magazine will also feature The Sun’s Hill reporting, D.C. sports and culture coverage, and opinion columnists.

Bellofatto — faux facial hair, tan trousers, knee-high boots and all — exhorted the class to join her in belting out the lyrics to the song “My Shot.”
“I’m just like my country, I’m young, scrappy and hungry,” the crowd sang, hooting with excitement and pushing the pace.

ICYMI cause I almost did: Last week dems sent a letter to USCIS citing two of my recent NPR stories that are looking into the backlogs at USCIS and pauses of app reviews.

NEW: More people have pending/unopened cases at USCIS than ever. The sharp jumps surpass increases during Trump's first term. Lawyers say it makes clients vulnerable to deportation. The admin says its their attempt to "not take shortcuts"

NEW: USCIS published its data for all of 2025, and even into Jan. 2026. The result:
2025 began w high #s of citizenship apps submitted & decided. By winter fewer were applying to become citizens — and fewer were given a decision.

Immigration courts by the #’s:
- A quarter less judges
- 400 less legal assistants and clerks
- 12 courts lost over half their judges, two have no full time IJs.
We break down a clear picture of what is happening across the country:

Each month thousands of people become American citizens. USCIS told me they “will not take shortcuts in the adjudications process.” And the process has gotten tougher.
But the process also goes on for millions. @AnushaMathur4 and I spoke with some:
