Antarctic Geopolitical Myths: an occasional series. No. 1: I have decided to run a series of threads to counter incessant basic mistakes made by #Antarctic analysts – especially those who should either know better, or who should have done just the minimum of research. 1/5

35 Years Ago, the World Chose to Protect Antarctica—Not Mine It
npolar.no/nyhet/35-ar-med-mi…
In 1991, nations made a remarkable agreement: Antarctica should be protected as a place for peace, science, and environmental stewardship—not mineral exploitation. The Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty put environmental protection at the heart of how an entire continent is governed and prohibited mineral resource activities.
Thirty-five years later, that commitment still matters. At a time when international cooperation is under growing pressure, Antarctica reminds us that countries with different interests can agree to protect something larger than themselves. Science over exploitation. Cooperation over competition. Responsibility to future generations over short-term gain. Antarctica belongs to no single nation. Its protection is a responsibility we share.

Antarctic Treaty: No... The Treaty does not get reviewed in 2048. @europe_says states "A review of the treaty is scheduled for the year 2048". The Environmental Protocol contains that provision; not the Treaty. 1/-->

2/ It is very, very unlikely that the fundamental accords in the Antarctic Treaty regarding sovereignty would be subject to any substantive discussion even if a conference of Parties was called to review the Environmental Protocol in 2048. -->
