New in MEC! @AnnikaFreudiger et al study genetic relatedness on rhesus macaques and find that low-coverage whole-genome sequencing offers an accurate, cost-effective alternative to widely used methods. @WileyEcology 📷 Caribbean Primate Research Center buff.ly/vzOjOud 1/3

Taking identity-by-descent (IBD) analysis into the wild! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… In this preprint, we leverage novel genomic methods to estimate fine-scale gradients of relatedness in animals and highlight their many applications in the field of ecology and evolution.🐒🧬 [1/3]

We established a pipeline to robustly call IBD segments (identical DNA stretches inherited from a common ancestor) in a nonhuman animal, even for low-coverage WGS data. This makes our method applicable to a wide range of species and study systems. [2/3]

With this method, we can capture the substantial variation of realized relatedness within and between kin classes. It enables us to detect previously unknown genetic relatives and to measure the level of background relatedness in the study population. [3/3]
