🙋♂️ Minnesota Starvation Study is KEY MUST KNOW study for anyone interested in nutrition & illness recovery!
🎥 Watch FULL STORY below to learn more!
👉Watch full video lecture & how study relates to post-ICU recovery on my 🧑🏫 YouTube page: @paul_wischmeyerMD
The Minnesota Starvation Study, conducted during World War II (1944-1945) by Dr. Ancel Keys, examined effects of severe caloric restriction and recovery from starvation. The study involved 36 healthy male volunteers who were conscientious objectors to military service. For six months, their daily caloric intake was to 1800 kcal/d simulating famine conditions.
The study revealed significant physical and psychological impacts of starvation. Physically, the men experienced dramatic weight loss, fatigue, reduced muscle mass, slowed metabolism, and symptoms of malnutrition. Psychologically, they developed an intense obsession with food, exhibited irritability, depression, anxiety, showed signs of cognitive impairment - and even LOST INTEREST IN SEX! 😳
In the rehabilitation phase, different recovery methods were tested, showing that rapid recovery required > 4000 kcal/d and up 5000-12000 kcal/d to restore health quickly.
This study provided valuable insights into the effects of prolonged starvation and has been influential in understanding recovery from malnutrition and even perhaps illness related weight loss from ICU and surgery!

💰 Malnutrition costs the UK ~£19.6 billion/yr, more than diabetes (£10B) and obesity (£6.5B)! Nutrition intervention isn’t just about health, it’s a financial necessity.

🤔 Are we relying too much on enteral feeding?
Enteral feeding delivers nutrients into the gut when patients can't eat enough by mouth. While often vital, it’s important not to over-rely on it when eating is possible.
#NHWeek2025 @NHWeek @ImperialPeople @BDA_Dietitians
📉 Fewer at-risk patients are getting a nutrition care plan. NCPs are essential as they provide a structured approach to improving nutritional status. NCPs aren't just about food—it's about patient safety, recovery & dignity.
#NHWeek2025 @NHWeek @ImperialPeople @BDA_Dietitians
Nurses play a key role in patient nutrition, improving outcomes through NCPs which:
✅ Support healing & recovery
✅ Endure adequate calorie & protein intake
✅ Identify patients needing extra support
✅ Prevent deterioration & dehydration
