My latest, Family Regulation’s Consent Problem, is out now! In it, I describe (some of!) the incredibly coercive & unconstitutional methods the state uses to extract families’ consent to home searches… (1/3) papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

And ultimately argue that by focusing too heavily on how to shore up consent, we may miss opportunities to meaningfully reduce surveillance of race-class subjugated families. (2/3)

(I kept thinking I’d wait til the world was less awful to post this but am reminded that the world will always be the world and I find hope & meaning in imagining and working toward a better version of my little corner of it.) (3/3)

My dad once flew from SF to TX via Newark because he "sleeps better on planes" (a/k/a loves frequent flyer miles) so, same energy.
You know first stop is always instanbul

The more important thing is that he (allegedly) stole millions of dollars from NYers while militarizing the city and justifying it all via racist dogwhistling & fearmongering, but I can't get over how GOOFY he is.

Absolute chef's kiss of a community note. What a lot of work passive voice is doing here!
Earlier today, one of our officers was shot while protecting our subway system. I am relieved to report he is in good condition now, and we have arrested the suspect who put so many lives in danger. I cannot thank these officers enough for their bravery.

Very happy to share that my article, Family Regulation's Consent Problem, will run in @ColumLRev! I argue that fam reg "consent" searches regularly violate the Constituion. . . & that the Constitution is a woefully incomplete solution to surveillance of marginalized communities.

It's exciting & an immense privilege & a little weird to get to transform one's outrage into articles and - hopefully - into action. Grateful for the people I've learned from & am inspired by & looking forward to learning more.

An Appeal survey of state prison systems reveals that prisoners in many of the hottest states live in units without air-conditioning. Only five states provide air conditioning in all prison housing units.

Another attempt to silence, intimidate, and undercut anyone who’s not white & not a cis man — particularly Black women. Gross.
In what is perhaps the most unhinged legal complaint I’ve read filed by actual lawyers, the extremist group America First Legal issues a conspiracy theorist rant on behalf of allegedly aggrieved white men in the legal academy where ppl of color occupy a mere 20% of all faculty.

After years of advocacy, the Assembly has the votes to pass a major bill to protect families from harassment via ACS/CPS — but they’re about to go home without voting on it. They have no excuse to avoid passing this.

The scary "book on terrorism" NYPD is using as evidence of criminal intent is an Oxford Press textbook from International Affairs U6387, a course taught this semester at Columbia by Michael E. O’Hanlon, director of research in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution
Pencils, books, laptops, those are the tools of students and what you expect to find on a college campus. But here’s what the NYPD found in Hamilton Hall at Columbia University after we were able to arrest the protestors and agitators for commandeering and barricading themselves inside the building. Gas masks, ear plugs, helmets, goggles, tape, hammers, knives, ropes, and a book on TERRORISM. These are not the tools of students protesting, these are the tools of agitators, of people who were working on something nefarious. Thankfully, your NYPD was able to prevent whatever they were planning and stop them before they could do it. Continue to peacefully and lawfully protest; but know that if you engage in illegal conduct, the NYPD will hold you responsible and hold you accountable—someone has to. @nypdpc @NYPD1stDep @nypd @nypdchiefpatrol @nypdchiefofdept

I am genuinely shocked anyone would tolerate this behavior by a public servant. @NYCMayor is this ethical? Is this professional? Does this reflect the kind of service you expect from your administration? What kind of institutional culture does this reflect and tone does it set?

The continued mismatch between @Columbia’s actions and the alleged harms remains baffling to the point of bad faith. And the tragedies the president laments below seem the predictable outcomes of her actions. I’m a proud alum, but I do not have faith in this administration.
