“Slava Ukraini” is the slogan @AdamKinzinger, a former U.S. congressman, displays in his username. As a Jewish scholar of the Holocaust and Ukrainian nationalism, I find that choice deeply troubling. This slogan is inseparable from a historical tradition of the OUN and UPA whose members and affiliates were implicated in anti-Jewish violence during the Holocaust, in the mass killing of Polish civilians, and later in violence against Ukrainians deemed politically or nationally “wrong.” As an American taxpayer, I have another objection: “Glory to Ukraine” is not America First. American taxpayers’ money should work for Americans — for its veterans, its children, its seniors, its communities. It should be used to confront the fentanyl epidemic, energy insecurity, crumbling infrastructure, and all the problems Americans face at home. And as someone who is well informed about Ukrainian corruption, I oppose pouring American taxpayers’ money into Zelensky's regime plagued by corruption and serious accountability concerns. I also oppose treating war as an open-ended business model in which Western money keeps flowing, politically connected interests prosper, and ordinary Ukrainians pay the highest price — with their lives. So yes, seeing “Slava Ukraini” emblazoned on the profile of an American politician strikes me as more than merely odd. It raises questions. This is not what American patriotism looks like. American patriotism means putting America and Americans first — not turning distant, endless foreign proxy wars into permanent political projects intertwined with the interests of the arms industry. The bill goes to the American taxpayer. The bloodiest part of the bill goes to ordinary Ukrainians.
