Football Won. Now, it is humanity's turn. 8.3 billion people, 195 nations, 48 teams, from every corner of the globe-yet not one minute of silence in mourning for the children killed in wars, during a sport that supposed to unite nations and remind us of our shared humanity. Even as the entire world is celebrating the World Cup final, Israel is killing people in Lebanon and Palestine; the Russia-Ukraine war had reached a terrifying stage; children were being killed in the Congo and Sudan; Rohingya refugees were drowning off the shores of Myanmar; and the United States—the host nation of the final—was bombing Iran at that very moment. Imagine what would happen if the entire world—or even just World Cup fans—took a firm stand: not merely by taking to the streets, but by heading to their governments and parliaments, to demand an end to these wars, or to abolish every warmongering politicians. This is precisely what happened in Spain, the World Cup winner. The current Prime Minister supported Israel from the early days of the genocide, sending millions of dollars’ worth of weaponry there between 2023 and 2024. He is the same leader who condemned and affirmed reports of rape and the beheading of children on October 7—allegations for which the United Nations possesses no evidence. Furthermore, he is the very same Prime Minister who bestowed honors upon UN officials for assisting him in burnishing his public image ahead of the upcoming elections—officials who, ironically, were the very ones who had previously authored reports regarding his military aid to Israel and had denied the occurrence of the aforementioned rapes and beheadings. Yet, when the Spanish people decided to take a stand against this injustice, the Prime Minister and the government responded. It was not because the Prime Minister suddenly realized the need to halt the genocide—their moral principles or humanity did not suddenly shift—but rather because their constituents demanded it; their political interests shifted in response to the voters' wishes, driven by the desire to remain in power. This is merely one example, and there are more and more of these hypocritical individuals—backed, of course, by other hypocrites. Do not fall into the trap of their propaganda; they seek nothing but your votes, and they care nothing for you. And now, these very same politicians come to lecture us on human rights, international law, and standing with Gaza—and we are expected to believe it! One day, everyone will have always been against this. Solidarity that arrives after the fact is not solidarity—it is hypocrisy. At the same time, however, this highlights the power that the people hold. Power resides where people believe it resides. Be like the Spaniard... ¡Felicidades, España!

🚨We are deeply alarmed by the reports that there is an imminent threat to Dr. #HussamAbuSafiya’s life as a result of torture and other ill treatment he has been suffering while in Israeli custody. Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Dr. Abu Safiya. Pending his release, we call on the Israeli Prison service to ensure he is fully protected from abuse, granted urgent adequate medical care and allowed immediate visitation by independent monitors. Act now: amn.st/6012BEBnD2 #FreeDrHussamAbuSafiya

Another unacceptable loss of a @RedCrossLebanon aid worker. The EU calls once again for full respect of International Humanitarian Law and for the protection of all civilians, including those risking their lives to help others.
📍Lebanon | We are deeply distressed by the killing of @RedCrossLebanon paramedic Hassan Badawi, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a strike while carrying out an emergency rescue mission in the Bint Jbeil district in southern Lebanon. We mourn this tragic loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and his colleagues. Our thoughts are also with another Lebanese Red Cross colleague who was injured in the same incident. Saving lives must never cost a life. Humanitarian and medical personnel must be protected.

There is no military objective that justifies the wholesale destruction of a society's infrastructure or the deliberate infliction of suffering on civilian populations.

You cannot bomb your way to trust, nor can you shoot your way to lasting safety. The history of the Middle East has reminded us of this truth time and again. Every new act of violence deepens wounds, fuels resentment, and sows the seeds of conflict for years to come. If we seek a future free of fear and mourning, we must first stop feeding the flames of hate and violence. The path forward, our only path forward, is the hard, courageous choice to build peace. #ChoosePeace

Bombing a hospital or a school isn't a "miscalculation." Killing a paramedic isn't "collateral damage." Starving civilians isn't "negotiating tactic." These are war crimes. Full stop. Call it what it is.

The killings in the last 24 hours of 14 health workers in southern #Lebanon mark a tragic development in the escalating Middle East crisis. @WHO has confirmed that 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses were killed in a strike late last night on the Bourj Qalaouiyeh primary healthcare center. Just hours earlier, two paramedics lost their lives in attacks on a health facility in Al Sowana. These incidents highlight the ongoing assault on Lebanon’s healthcare system, which is crucial for the populations it serves. Since March 2, WHO has verified 27 attacks on healthcare in Lebanon, resulting in 30 deaths and 35 injuries, including the horrifying events of Friday. WHO condemns this tragic loss of life and emphasizes that health workers must always be protected. According to international humanitarian law, medical personnel and facilities should never be attacked or militarized. The intensification of conflict in Lebanon and the broader Middle East increases the likelihood of such tragedies. Urgent action is required to de-escalate the crisis and protect the health of people throughout the region.

Global military expenditure just hit $2.7 trillion - in a single year. According to @UN estimates, ending world hunger by 2030 would require $93 billion annually. That means we spend almost 30 times more every year on killing each other than on making sure everyone eats. Numbers don't lie. Our priorities do.

The conflict in the Middle East is having an impact on health care in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the availability of supplies, access to care, and evacuations. In Gaza, most crossings remain closed. Medical evacuations have been suspended since 28 February, and rotations of Emergency Medical Teams are on hold. Essential medicines and medical supplies, including antibiotics and medicines for chronic conditions, are running low. Fuel is being prioritized for the facilities that need it most in order to keep life-saving health services running. Only the Kerem Shalom crossing reopened on 3 March to allow the entry of some fuel and humanitarian aid. In the West Bank, checkpoint closures and movement restrictions are obstructing access to health care. Ambulances are taking longer to reach patients as they must use longer routes and search for accessible gates. Even before this escalation, medical supplies were in short supply and health workers were receiving only partial salaries, affecting the functioning of health facilities. WHO calls for the opening of all routes into the Gaza Strip, unimpeded movement of medical supplies and health workers across the occupied Palestinian territory, and the protection of health care. More importantly, WHO calls for immediate de-escalation in the region by all parties. The bravest choose peace. War is not the answer. We need peace. Now.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The UN has repeatedly found war to be an answer: 1950- authorized military action to repel North Korea invasion of South Korea (leading to the Korean War under a UN Command). 1990–1991, Resolution 678 authorized "all necessary means" to expel Iraq from Kuwait britannica.com/place/Korea/Th… grokipedia.com/page/United_Na… digitallibrary.un.org/record/102245?…

The @UN Charter is the foundation of international relations, the bedrock of peace, sustainable development & human rights. When leaders run roughshod over international law, picking & choosing which rules to follow – they are undermining global order & setting a perilous precedent. When a handful of individuals can bend global narratives, sway elections, or dictate the terms of public debate, we are facing inequality and the corruption of institutions & our shared values. The Charter is a compact which binds us all. All countries must adhere to it, fully & faithfully.

I strongly condemn the Israeli authorities’ actions to demolish the @UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound, which remains @UN premises. The continued escalatory actions against UNRWA are unacceptable & inconsistent with Israel’s clear obligations under international law. I urge the Government of Israel to immediately cease the demolition & to return the compound & other UNRWA premises to the UN. un.org/sg/en/content/sg/stat…
