Sid can afford to treat every election in New York as a referendum on Israel. Rabbis responsible for tens of thousands of Jewish New Yorkers don’t have that luxury. And that’s something he seems completely incapable of understanding. I’m a Jewish New Yorker, someone for whom Israel is extremely important. But I also understand that Israel cannot be the only lens through which we view every political decision made by Jewish communities in America. Sid, on the other hand, seems to view local politics almost exclusively through the lens of Israel: what’s good for Israel, what’s bad for Israel, and where a particular politician stands on Israel. But consider the reality of Hasidic communities in New York. You have rabbis who lead communities of tens of thousands of people, all with real, everyday needs. Some need more housing, others depend on Medicaid, and there are countless other issues involving education, public services, and government representation. These rabbis have a responsibility to the people who look to them for leadership. While Hasidic Jews vote overwhelmingly Republican in national elections, local politics requires a different calculation. They cannot endorse politicians solely based on their positions on Israel or how right-wing or left-leaning they happen to be. They have to consider who can actually deliver for their communities. Jews, especially Hasidic Jews, are a minority with limited representation in government. Building relationships, securing representation, and making sure our communities have a voice are essential. Endorsing politicians who are almost certain to lose, simply because doing so makes for better virtue signaling, is stupid, ineffective, and, frankly, irresponsible. And btw I personally won’t be voting for the candidates these rabbis have endorsed. My own political views put me on the opposite side. But I can disagree with their endorsements while still respecting their decisions and understanding the reasoning behind them. I recognize that these rabbis are responsible for entire communities, while I’m ultimately responsible for my own vote. And you don’t have to believe in these rabbis, follow their religious teachings, or agree with their political decisions. But any spiritual leader whom thousands of people look to for guidance deserves a certain level of respect. The disrespect Sid has shown toward these rabbis is, frankly, disgusting. These are people who carry enormous responsibilities, and ridiculing them simply because their political calculations differ from yours shows an astonishing lack of respect. The fundamental problem, in my view, is that Sid approaches these issues through the lens of his own individual interests and his concern for Israel, while these rabbis must consider the collective interests of the communities they represent. He seems unable to appreciate that Jewish communities have real needs, obligations, and interests that extend far beyond Israel. And for someone who claims to care so deeply about Jews, lashing out at Jewish communities almost daily because their leaders make political decisions he disagrees with is deeply wrong. Frankly, it’s quite Palestinian of him.
